The 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI STEALS Agent 001's Heart, Does Our Photos Make YOU Lust For Its US Debut?
Last night we showed you Agent 001's shots straight from Napa Valley of the Volkswagen Scirocco R. Though that vehicle is a helluva good looking product, it is not on its way to the US in the immediate future. Essentially, Volkswagen of America was gauging perception. Maybe we'll get it on the refresh or next-gen.

More importantly, Volkswagen did give 001 the chance to pilot an all-new veedub we will be getting. That would be the all-new Mark 7 Golf GTI. It's been making some serious waves abroad as folks have been getting behind the wheel and taking them for spins BUT there is one catch to the auto the head cheese drove.

It was a Euro-spec vehicle.

In most cases this isn't a problem but knowing Volkswagen and how it has been altering vehicles that it sells for the U.S. market, it actually doesn't give us an entirely accurate picture of what we will be receiving. That is until VW has a press release that says "Yes, the U.S. will get the same specification as Europe."

001 tells me he walked away impressed and like the Scirocco R it "stole his heart." Let's hope the U.S.-spec doesn't waver too far from the Euro version.

The nav unit looks interesting. If they dump that lousy RNS-315 this looks like a major improvement. However, I have to have my HD Radio. I have really become spoiled by it, although even streaming Pandora blows SiriusXM out of the water.

I have to say once you go HD radio it's tough to go back.

It never seems to constantly stream in HD though — is that normal?

The only issues I have with HD is that as a digital stream, it can be blocked by terrain fairly easily. I do lose the signal occasionally (the Seattle area is not particularly flat) but I consider it a minor annoyance. The issue could be with the station itself, possibly, but there's only one station that I only listen to the HD-2 stream. If I am on the HD-1 stream from any station the transition from digital to analog is seamless, with the slight change in audio quality the only giveaway. I mention only a slight change, but that isn't really true. It truly is a higher quality audio experience, and far surpasses SiriusXM. My preferred station plays 100% music: no DJs, no commercials. Perfect!

Nice improvements. I love my 2011 GTI and about the only thing that would get me out of it is a GTD. Waiting, waiting, waiting....

This new GTI has a classy interior. However, compared to a Scirocco R the GTI simply does not do it for me.I do not care about a GTI or the new R version that's coming. VW needs to grow a pair of balls and build the Scirocco in Tennesee or Puebla. Doing this would cut the costs and make it a viable business case to sell it. Obviously building it in Europeand trying to sell it here will never work for VAG.The car has to be in the 23 to 28 grand bracket if it is going to properly compete. Without the AWD they could sell the R for 30 grand.Thats what has to happen. VAG knows it. They just need to commit.

Scirocco R is not AWD, its Front Driven.

Golf R is AWD

Compared to the old Golf R and GTI the Scirocco and Scirocco R was a more engaging car to drive. The old R, while offering more stability and AWD grip was less fun to drive than the standard GTI. The Scirocco had a different platform than the Golf or Golf R. It has shared a platform with the VW Eos. This platform has wider front and rear tracks than the Golf. The Scirocco also is lower in height and therefore has a lower center of gravity. That being said the new GTI has gotten rave reviews, especially with the optional steering system. It's on the new modular platform. This is promising for the new Golf R with AWD. However neither car looks as good as the Scirocco in my opinion. I would hope that VAG keeps the new Scirocco lower, lighter and at the top of the heap in terms of driving pleasure.

Wheels don't do it for me, a bit tacky.

I too am waiting for the GTD.
