UAW And VW Start High Level Negotiations For Worker Representation

Top executives at Volkswagen AG started high-level negotiations with the UAW on Friday on how the union might represent workers at VW's assembly plant in Chattanooga, a German newspaper reported today.

According to a report in Handelsblatt, UAW President Bob King met with Horst Neumann, the board member for human resources at VW, during a meeting that started Friday at the automaker's corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Citing anonymous sources, the newspaper reports that they discussed setting up a German-style "works council" to represent workers at the Chattanooga plant.

The UAW and VW declined to comment on the report.

Why? Does VW have a deathwish in the US?

If they unionize, I would NEVER consider buying a VW (and I have family who work for Audi/VW). They will of course need a 15 minute break built into their union contract like the Chrysler workers, so they can smoke some weed and drink a few beers on LUNCH.

GM's formerly ultra-crappy designs, combined with a huge recession, which got them into so much trouble. And now, GM, with its horrible U.S. workers and greatly improved new auto design are back on top again.

Seeing how VW's German workers are all unionized, as are those of BMW and Mercedes, I'm sure VW isn't quite as horrified at the idea as we Americans, who somehow think all the workers will automatically become lazy if the plant is unionized.

It's time to stop demo nixing the middle class and U.S. workers, who still have some of the highest productivity in the world.
