Lexus Outsells BMW And Mercedes-Benz In August - Is The Party Over For The Germans?
Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus, the top- selling luxury-auto brand in the U.S. for 11 years through 2010, posted a 23 percent increase in August for its first monthly win in a year.

Deliveries rose to 29,792, Toyota said today in a statement. Lexus beat out Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz and BMW to claim the monthly crown for the first time since August 2012 and just the second time since the end of 2010.

Sales surged 87 percent for Lexus's new IS sedan and 32 percent for its RX SUV. For the year, the Toyota brand still trails BMW, the annual leader for the past two years, and Mercedes. Lexus lost the full-year title when natural disasters in Asia curtailed its production in 2011.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Indeed, this 1-month trend signals the end of the German brands, the supremacy of Lexus, and it forecasts that Lexus will likely be the only car company in existence in the not-too-distant future.

Meh!

This was only due to that "Golden Opportunity" sale they had last month.

I do think life will be more difficult for the Germans. But then that's why the Germans have been preparing for this day with their platform sharing, joint venture, shift mfg to cheaper countries, co-manufacturing initiatives over the last 5-8 years. I think they've learned their lesson and will be in better position to compete. Not sure about the European market since I don't hear much about the Japanese changing to compete better in Europe but certainly in the US, the Germans will have to work harder.

most of the automotive industry is struggling. just a handful of companies are consistently profitable. and the germans are among the most profitable. given all the efforts you mention, i think they will continue to be so.

One thing that I notice is that for the past few years when credit was tight it seemed that only people who actaully had disposable income to burn were the ones making high end purchases. Now that the economy has picked up and credit is easier to get again, it seems that all the "wannabees" are able to keep up with the Joneses. I guess this country never learns, lol!

BINGO - as soon as credit got tight the wannabes couldn't get financing.

Those with real credit were scooping up the German brands. They weren't relying on second tier financing to get that luxury barge in the driveway.

look model by model. lexus doesn't outsell almost any of the direct german competitors. IS, GS, LS, LX, GX--all FAR outsold by their much more expensive german competitors. lexus sales are based on two models: ES (which competes with buick, not bmw, fact) and the incredibly boring but high quality RX.

comparisons on a total sales volume basis are silly. look model by model.

Don't overlook the incentives the german's are throwing at all of their models to retain market share. Overpriced POS....

Funny but LEXUS is throwing out the most incentives (which they did in August per LEXUS of Jacksonville which they also own BRUMOS-MB and PORSCHE) in order to reclaim the crown. Also funny how people in this country are willing to purchase the "Overpriced POS...." just like they do with APPLE products, GUCCI goods and TIFFANYS in order to have the so call "best". Stop hating and keep selling cars buddy, maybe I will go visit you when I trade my LS.

the $1,000 difference in incentives between lexus and the german makes doesn't even come close to bridging the $10,000 to $40,000 gaps in MSRP. take a look at net selling prices. and then get back to us.

This must be why I was able to purchase a brand new LS 460 with an MSRP of $68K for $57K. Good point!

The thing is, Doesn't matter how many cars Lexus sells in the US, It can't touch the German big 3 world wide, Both Sales and Brand.

Don't tell them that, they think the US market is the only market. That is why they sell cars for a living.

To compare world wide you would have to include toyota. Mercedes and bmw are like toyota and make cheap models just like toyota. Toyota sells over 10 million cars. More than Mercedes and BMW. Put that in you pipe and smoke it.....LOL!!!

I think you might be wrong, VW does not include sales of Bugatti, Lambo, Bentley, Audi and so on on their worldwide sales. Additionally you are comparing apple to oranges. We are talking luxury sales, when have you seen "luxury" in the same sentence as Toyota? Lexus yes, Toyota NO. I think you are the one smoking that pipe. I think you are one of those "wannabes" we are talking about. Yes, I might go to Capitol Grille and pay a little more for a steak beacuse I want perceived quality but if you want to continue going to Golden Corral because you don't want to overpay, be my guest. That is why we all work hard, so we can buy whatever we think is a good deal. Most of my colleagues think I am the one who overpaid for a "souped up Toyota" and there is where the problem lies. In this country most people don't believe Lexus is at the same luxury tier as the Germans, you are completely biased since you sell their products. Let's not even talk around the world, which I have pleanty of experience living and traveling abroad; most of them don't see Lexus as a luxury brand that is why they have never been able to catch up on sales like they have in the USA. Toyota is seen as an economy car worldwide just like VWs. You sound like most of the rednecks here in Jacksonville that think UF is an Ivy league school. LoL!

knowitall: just compare sales of competitive models: E-class and 5-series, for example, sell 10 times as many cars per years globally as the GS. same goes for the LS vs. 7-series and S-class.

lexus is not a player of any significance outside of the US.

who cares? I drive what I want and I dont care what else is selling. I do know one thing though, you are an idiot if you buy a Lexus.

Just keep overpaying and when that POS you drive is out of warranty and falling apart keep telling yourself how smart you think you are. ROFLMAO!!!

Funny how most Americans continue to overpay for their phones (Apple), leather goods (LV, GUCCI), even their homes to live in a nice place. After reviewing your ideology I will get the free phone at Verizon, buy me a velcro wallet and live in a box because we all overpaying for stuff. LoL! What an DUMBAZZ! You should be selling Toyotas and not Lexuses, why overpay for a Lexus when you can have a Corolla? They last as long after the warranty is gone, right?

Another thing, if anyone is concern about paying for service after a warranty runs out on a luxury vehicle they should have not bought in the first place. This is telling me they really cannot afford it. This is like the Dumbazzes that buy huge SUVs and trucks and complain about gas prices. Give me a break! Like I stated before on one my previous comments, these are the people that are responsible for the increased in sales now that credit is widely available again. The wannabees trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Can someone please explain why Americans are so obsessed with the Lexus RX even though it is the most boring car to own? Seriously......
