Porsche 918 Spyder Decimates Nürburgring Track Record With Sub 7 Minute Run
The new Porsche 918 Spyder has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6min 57sec, a time that’s 14 seconds faster than the existing 'Ring record. Such a quick lap was only possible because of the 918 Spyder’s hybrid powertrain, says Porsche, and the new Nürburgring record is claimed to prove the potential its new supercar.

Porsche had two 918 Spyders at the Nürburgring for record attempt, and former rally champion Walter Röhrl, Porsche test driver Timo Kluck and Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb on hand to set the times. Holy cow. That beats the Ferrari 599XX, even, to say nothing of street-legal cars. Very high bar for McLaren and Ferrari to aim for. Right now the P1's fastest time is 7:04 which we know they're not happy with.

An improvement of 15 sec from its last recorded time I believe. But my golly what a time! I Leno will be ordering one as well. Apparently when the driver was talking about the car's handling during the record lap, he emphasized on just how good the traction and acceleration out of the corners was. It might be too early to speculate, but I think the 918's all wheel drive system just might have done enough to negate its power-to-weight deficit against the LaFerrari and P1.

Agent009, did you conveniently see my submission regarding this same story on Auto Express and just post the CAR magazine review instead?

The pressure is on McLaren and Ferrari. Porsche throws down the gauntlet, with confidence.
Is there no one else who can get under 7 minutes?
