Fifth Victory for the Audi R10 TDI at Road America

That was an awesome race, another victory (1-2) for TDI power Auudi R10. Job well done.

Credit, were credit is due. Fantastic job Audi. The R10 definately is a worthy succesor to the R8.

illogical- Dyson is a formidable opponent, they are a force in any series they race in.

One of the Dyson drivers was interviewed during the race, and the was stating that when he took all of the wing out (zero down force), he could just start to keep up with the R10. He was very much in awe on the R10, repeatedly referring to it as incredible several times. Actually the 2nd place R10 was actually a lap down after a bump by the Dyson sent it into the gravel on the first turn and it had to pit to get the rocks out.

Get ready for some more restrictions on the Audi’s though, until the actually lose a race. To bring in an unproven design with an unproven power plant and unproven technology and to utterly pummel your opposition simply does not happen that often. A Balance must be made to keep it interesting.

Another incredible fact for you guys who don’t think the P1 class is fast. At the 2 ½ lap mark, the Audis were already lapping the GT2 class cars (IE: BMW M3 and the new IS350), on a 4 mile circuit.. That is an incredible differential of speed.

To add to Plano's comment, i myself was wondering if this was the first race will the extra restrictions on it.

That being said, they still managed 1-2, even *with* getting bumped into the gravel *and* with all the restrictions, that is just amazing. I wonder what the new restrictions are going to be in order to "level the playing field"

I just hope they keep on winning, kinda as a way of throwing it back in their face for putting all these restrictions on them.

Jeffy210- It look like all of the restrictions on the R10 were in place and it really didn't has that much of an effect. Makes me wonder if the Audi's are indeed running at full power. Seems like they have been slammed with a slew of restrictions and the still walk away from the others.

The other competitors should step up their game. New Restrictions should not be applied to Audi anymore. Either, the competitors can come up with their diesel cars or don't compete, but stop whining. I heard other competitors are bringing their diesels for next year.

Just reading this makes me want a diesel so bad. Hurry up America and cleanse your diesel fuel!!!

byhsu- I am not sure competition can do too much at all. They really can’t come up with the type of torque to match, and HP between the two is pretty close. That is why they have dropped 142 lbs out of the competition and restricted how fast the Audi can fill up in the pits. All calculated measures to slow them down and give the Dyson team and others a shot.

Listening to the cars exit the pit the Dyson rap it up to 15k then shift, the R10 by comparison just winds up to 5k and shifts. The Audi up shifts were there in half the time. Torque governs directly how hard you accelerate from a given speed. The Audi seems to accelerate much harder and thus has an edge on any road course. This would not be as much of a factor circling an oval, but any time you accelerate out of a corner it is a strong advantage. Watching the race is was apparent the Dyson team was pulling out all of the stops, they actually collided with the Audis a total of three times just trying to keep the pace. They were noticeably looser after taking the entire wing down force off just to lower drag.

I have argued in numerous other racing specific venues that strong torque can be a major factor, which much debate to the contrary. I think now Audi has proven that point without any doubt.

logical- that is so true. Audi has no competition in the Prototype One series and they claim to be the best. Earlier this season the Audi team was actually beaten by the Prototype 2 class Porsche RS Spyder, so hows that for being the best.

That was the old R8. If anything the Porsche Spyder is the most "illegal" car that is racing. Face the facts, the R10 is undefeated

The ALMS has decided to allow the RS Spyder to perform WAY WAY WAY above the performance that P2 cars are supposed to have. They made that for more competiton in the prototype class. Also the RS Spyder has had reliability problems. Also, Audi is directly using what they learn from the R10 to make the next generation TDIs much better.

three2four- The Porsches did finish first, and Audi let them pass. The reason? The R10 was over in France and the sole remaining examples of the R8 were over here. They still had two races after this and the Porsches were dueling with each other for the P2 win. Dyson was also out. so let the Porsches finish ahead and don't get tangled up in their theatrics. It simply was not worth the risk and the points to try and finish ahead of another car because you want to and risk the only chassis you have state side. To try and win a battle you have already won was not worth putting the whole season at stake.

If you want true racing, I'll even throw in....German DTM!!

Porsche and Audi will NEVER race agains each other in the same category. It is done on purpose for respect for each other.
