Porsche 918 Production Starts Today - But Who Is The Targeted Buyer?

Production of the Porsche 918 Spyder begins at the firm's Zuffenhausen factory today. First deliveries are expected before the end of the year.

UK prices start at £657,400, rising to £718,000 if equipped with the optional Weissach performance package. Porsche says orders for the initial limited run of 918 examples have already exceeded expectations, and two thirds of the planned production run is already booked. Porsche directors gave the green light for production following 2000 declarations of interest in 2010.

Who is it for? That's pretty easy: Sports car enthusiasts with deep pockets.

It looks gorgeous, without any of that angular Stealth Bomber styling, or weird "Lookit me! I'm from the future" stuff. Simply beautiful!

With 2000 letters of interest, I'd say their target audience doesn't need to be defined... It's there in their hands.

One third of them have already ponied up. It's a matter of identifying the next 15% of them who are ready to jump and I'd bet that with the ring numbers, it shouldn't take a very long time.

But then again, who knows...

There may be a few others that jump in the fray late in the game. I thought about it, though not quite as seriously as it deserves, but I think it would be a cause for divorce...
