STUD OR DUD? Spy On The Prowl Catches Porsche Macan In The Buff
A good spy never has his camera very far away and one of our readers proved he was up to the task when the yet to be released Porsche Macan drove by sans camo.

This upclose and personal candid and give us an excellent pre-production preview of this pint sized crossover.

Can you see a bit of the Q5 in the roofline?  How about the Panamera in the boot?

Either way we can thank Ryan B for the quick eye and reflexes needed to snag this excellent shot.

Stud for me , following the real lines , I like it , I hope the tails lights are something similar to the Carreras models, but now it has those cover so we have to wait to see the real design.

Dud. Baby Cayenne is not working for me. I'm sure it'll have amazing driving dynamics, though.

It's about time Porsche started copying Hyundai and Kia.

Now we can finally have an overpriced German built Hyundai!

I like it. Very feminine though.

Porsche. A legendary name that used to mean the body was low and the tires were wide.

This is the real question mark for me: when I want a sporty vehicle, I expect to be able to easily see over it ... not be some top-heavy monstrosity. The Q5 is 1.65m in height (~5'5") which is IMO easily a foot too much...

FYI, for point of reference, the BMW 335i Touring is 1.417m, the BMW X1 is 1.544m, and the forthcoming Mercedes GLA is reported to be 1.494m

...as such, I'd want to see the Macan come in at under 1.45m to be legitimate.

hhhh, based on your expectations, you probably shouldn't be shopping in this specific category of car

@cidflekken: you're correct that this catagory isn't a great fit because I don't really want an SUV: my current daily driver is an old Mercedes C230K Coupe (aka "hatchback"), and all that I really want is just another nice German hatchback ...

... but in the USA Marketplace, German hatches nearly don't exist anymore, let alone nice ones, so what other choices do I really have?

For pure German hatch, its either the VW Golf/GTI or the BMW 328/335xi GT. If we expand it to include wagons, we pick up the Jetta, BMW 3er Touring and the Allroad. If we expand once more to pick up the small crossovers, we get the X1, Q5 and the arriving-in-2014 GLA and Macan.

For bonus enthusiast points, go through the above list and cross out those which aren't available with a manual transmission.

I'm tired and weary of German cars. I'm waiting for the Maserati Levante.
