Poor Man's Porsche? High Performance Beetle On The Way

New spy shots reveal Volkswagen is preparing a high-performance variant of the Beetle.

Having debuted in concept guise at the 2011 LA Auto Show, the hardcore VW Beetle R has finally been spied in prototype form as the German carmaker readies the car for release in 2014. Wider, more aggressive styling characterized the concept, and while the test mule appears to be wearing the R-Line package, there’s little doubt the production model will be rolled out with a more menacing facade including a more sporty set of tailpipes.
