Mazda Pushing For More RWD Model To Challenge The Germans

According to US motoring site Edmunds, the push is being led by Mazda engineers in middle- and senior-ranking positions, who believe Mazda would benefit from a rear-wheel-drive focused range.

The strategy would see Mazda producing more driver-focused cars with an emphasis on being fun to drive. The Japanese manufacturer would move away from mainstream front-wheel-drive models like the Mazda3 and Mazda6, and follow the likes of the MX-5 and RX series.

Currently, no mainstream Japanese manufacturer has a rear-drive-biased range, so the strategy would help Mazda stand out. Lexus and Infiniti manufacture several rear-wheel-drive model lines but do not compete directly with Mazda.

no mainstream manufacturer PERIOD is doing this - no matter where they're from.

The closest would be Hyundai.

Mazda could very well become what Alfa Romeo USED TO BE!

Hyundai is not Japanese, genius, so you can stop shouting now!

Why aren't they bringing that Mazda station wagon over? Bring the diesel version one over now.

If this report is accurate, it may indicate a Mazda/Alfa Romeo/Dodge platform with distinctly Japanese/Italian/American variants coming from it. If Fiat were smart, it would merge with Mazda once it finishes acquiring Chrysler. Mazda is simply better at FWD in the sizes that Chrysler needs for survival. Fiat is not in the hunt with a true Golf/Jetta rival, but Mazda is. Which would anyone rather drive...a Dart or a Mazda3? Hands down, Mazda. Fiat has ZERO experience in the CamCord market, but the Mazda6 is VERY competent. An MFC (Mazda-Fiat-Chrysler) Motors could give VW some serious competition.
