At $60K Is The Turbocharged Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Going To Find Many Takers?
We’re currently entering a new era for high-performance coupes and sedans. German automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and its AMG performance division have been known to build naturally aspirated V8s that pack plenty of horsepower, but don’t exactly return the best fuel economy.

To adapt to today’s reality of government fuel emissions regulations, changes need to be made to the concept of a rear-drive, V8-powered premium sport sedan.

MBUSA reported 50 percent of CLA 45 AMG's shipped to US dealers will be "Base" CLA 45 AMG's coming just under $51k

If thats true...they should sell well

If the current demand for the non-AMG CLA is an indication, Mercedes should have no issues with sales for the CLA45 AMG.

Just watched the MT video and I cannot wait to take the CLA45 AMG for a test drive. Carlos Lago is, IMO, one of the best reviewers so I trust his assessments.

There are two things that are preventing me from absolutely drooling over this car: the 4-banger engine note and that tacked-on look of the information screen.

I like it. But 009 doesn't

For fans of three point star, the CLA45 AMG will seem like a "reasonable" price, but many consumers in this segment will wait for BMW to deliver and price the M3 & M4 before they decide.

Cadillac also has a say in this fight when they finally announce and release the ATS-V.

I bet you the M3/4 will be almost $20K more than this. People who cross-shop this will be looking at either the S3, S4 or 135i or 335i.

There is no way the M3/M4 are going to hit the $80k mark. I bet the M3/M4 will stay relatively close to current M3 price.

Which incidentally is close to $70K when reasonably equipped. My point was that's still much higher than most people in that range will be looking at.

Dunno... AMG has its cache, and the star... but the product? Not so sure. I saw the CLA in Europe 3 weeks ago and I think its fat, awkward and not very pretty. Perhaps the next gen will be "puberty" for this car but I think it looks forced, the interior is cheap looking and how much room in the back seat & trunk? Mercedes "IS" Mercedes so I'm sure they'll sell but not to me...

I also saw the new A3 sedan in Amsterdam Airport, its gorgeous... the S3 will undoubtedly compete with this car and the Audi wins on looks alone!

When I priced one out (still thinking about it.. but leaning in another direction at the moment) it was actually at right about $50000. Not $60000. No need for another $10k of crap, would rather take a vacation or two abroad :)

I am hoping that it drives much better than the junk of the regular CLA. I am so surprised on how poorly that car drives. From the video this looks like a fun car, yet I wouldn't pay anywhere near $60k for it as there are much better options for just a little more. I would rather get a Competiton package 2011 or 2012 M3 coupe ...

the upcoming is-f might be better than this for 60k..

The AMG needed to come in at $40K. In person, this is a truly dismal car.

LOL. Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself more than convince anyone else.

I suspect many buyers will go for the Audi S3 sedan instead. The S3 sedan will offer significantly better interior quality, better handling and driving dynamics, nearly the same 0-60 mph acceleration time, and more technology options with a base price that is $5K-8K lower than the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG.

It also doesn't hurt that the A3/S3 sedans have a strong resemblance to the A4 and A6 sedans making buyers of the A3 feel like they are getting a more expensive car than they actually are.

The A3/S3 also look like the Jetta and Passat, and, actually, moreso.

Even at $50K this is an overpriced mess. For $35K maybe...

Name a car that costs $35k that can out perform it? or even come close?

Torque steer notwithstanding...For the price of this FWD mess that Mercedes is putting forward, there are several better choices: 300C. 300C SRT8, ATS, CTS, Genesis R Spec, 3 Series, A4, IS, WRX, Chevy SS, and on and on and on, The GLA is garbage and the GLAAMG is beyond laughable.

300C- I dont want a rental car, ATS/CTS- design ages faster than it depreciates, Genesis R Spec hahaha like I would pay $40k plus for a F-ing Hyundai, 3 series way to common, A4 way to dull, IS- Stop It, WRX- perhaps if i was in high school, Chevy SS, Transformers was a great movie but still didn't sell me on "Bumble Bee"

This is what I wrote over at Mercedes Benz Advisors when they asked about the new CLA. I really don't think this car lends itself to be optioned up to a $60k car unless you don't car at all about resale values. "I went to see the new CLA in person yesterday. Sadly, to me it is much more attractive in photos and videos than in person. Comparing the looks to the CL in the showroom it does not have the streamlined look I expected. The front end has two contrasting plastic grills. The lower facia air intake is a diamond mesh plastic which contrasts with the pinpoint circular array of the plastic upper air intake. The car has a distinct snout which reminded me of an older SL front end.

The rear deck lid looks a lot like an older BMW 6 Series with its high trunk lid and built-in spoiler. The overwrought look carries over into the interior where the new look round HVAC air outputs are very large and have a "in your face" feel to them. Combined with the standard grey plastic they are set in it too looks over done and somewhat cheap. The rest of the interior , seats, steering wheel door panels ate. looked very good. All three of the cars I saw were in excess of $36K so forget about driving away in one of these at close to the advertised price of $30K.

I do wish you could order one of these 2015 model year cars with a 4 cyl. fuel efficient diesel European Delivery as it could be a resale champ in a few years but that's not in the cards just yet."
