Honda Thinks It Will Become Relevant Again With 50MPG Accord - Is That All It Is Going To Take?

Honda plans a gasoline-electric lineup overhaul starting with an Accord Hybrid it says tops Toyota and Ford sedans as it seeks relevancy in the segment.

The 2014 version of Honda’s flagship sedan goes on sale Oct. 31, with a base price that’s comparable with a V6 engine version of the Accord and rated as getting 50 m.p.g. in city driving. That’s just the start, said John Mendel, executive vice president of the U.S. unit.

As long as Honda commits styling atrocities, has declining quality/reliability (warranty incidence is up), and continues to see Acura as a Japanese Mercury, it is the next Mitsubishi dying brand. Honda sales are good ONLY because Honda has a LOT of incentive money on every car at the dealer level. Hyundai/Kia is the new Honda and Honda is one of the Japanese "Big Three" that still thinks they are on game...so USA Big 3 30 years ago.

This post is a joke, right? EVERY car company is offering incentives on their products, practically giving away lease deals. I doubt that's the reason Honda was the TOP retail sales brand in key categories for the first 7 months of the year. Remember, Honda has less than 3% fleet sales compared to its direct competition which is at 13-26%. Hyundai/Kia sales, no matter how much people tout their products, still cannot even touch Honda's sales. Yes, maybe Acura is suffering on the sedan side of things, but their sales are still trending ahead of last year and ahead of Audi and Infiniti.

That and seats that are comfortable and doors that close without sounding like a tin toy.

No joke. With as much money as Honda is putting on EVERY car to inflate sales ($25k to dealers to fire sale the Acura Accord oops RLX) they are headed for implosion. Being a Honda fanboy is pretty pathetic is 2013.

it makes sense; I've owned the Acura TL 2012 since 2012; has only 5K miles and it's been the most solid Acura I've owned; tested the KIA lines and Hyundai, too; want to wait for 2014's intro for TLX; must wait for that first auto show of 2014 to see their real ware and patience may work out, well.

A 50 MPG Accord will be competitive again, in a tight market. As much as folks deride Honda for "sliding into decline" the Accord is still the sporty alternative to the Camry. I wish them well.
