The Buck Stops Here - Porsche 911 vs Nissan GT-R Who Is the Real Top Gun?

It's no exaggeration to say that we'd go to the ends of the Earth to drive the new 2014 Porsche 911 GT3. Right now our destination in the Austrian Alps feels about as far away.

On any normal day the Fern Pass might seem quite beautiful. However, stuck behind an endless stream of campers when you're driving a new GT3 to a spectacular destination with a 2013 Nissan GT-R in waiting, it's about the most frustrating place imaginable. Gradually and mercifully, the traffic thins and the GT3 starts to stretch its legs.

I guess search for "The Real Top Gun" won't stop until the Porsche wins at least once. Right?

I doubt it. This is a 'forever' fight, though it seems the GT3 wins this bout over the GT-R. And other cars will come along. The spread is gradually diminishing, until at least we jump into non-wheeled vehicles.

If you're a professional racer on a track, then having the best numbers matters.

If you're an idiot who thinks he's got the chops of a professional racer, and you race on public streets, then it matters to you (but please get the hell off public streets and stop endangering others!!!).

If you're someone who buys a car and believes he gets instant street cred based on his purchase, then it also matters.

But if you don't fit into any of these categories, it doesn't matter one iota what the numbers say, or what happens on the track, or what others think. All that matters is if you love your car. If you do, then awesome! Chances are you're not giving much credence to who thinks which car is the "Top Gun."

Well said. These arguments always ends in somebody showing up with a Lambo or a Ferrari and everybody else starts arguing about "value" and "reliability", etc.

Everyday drivable + reliable: Porsche

Bang for the buck = GTR

"Exotic" head turner: Lambo/Ferrari

American Pride: New Corvette

Whatever your priority, there's a car that fits it to a 'T'.

I prize a car that I can drive everyday without feeling beat up or having to treat it "special", and for that reason, I'm a Porsche fan. I have a few friends with GTR's, great cars, not for me, hate the lack of peripheral visibility.
