SPIED! Subaru's Next-Gen Impreza WRX AND STI Snapped During Testing
Although most folks would likely agree that Subarus are relegated to a life in snowbelts and the New England area, they likely haven't been behind the wheel of one of its more spicy products, like the Impreza WRX and STI.

Having been more accustomed to the marque and the highly modified previous gen Impreza WRX my brother used to drive, as well as one of my best friend's personal 2011 WRX, I have to say they're outstanding autos for a couple of reasons: 1) From the factory they're tremendously powerful, durable and simple machines, and 2) There is a HUGE market for modifications that will make these already quick cars blisteringly fast.

This is why I am pumped to see that the Impreza WRX and STI will make another appearance in the new body style.

Seen here for the FIRST time, we're getting a glimpse at both cars during development. So far no word on when these are expected to debut at an auto show near you.

Subaru owners are blind the the readily apparent shortcomings of the brand. They have always had utterly atrocious styling and the flat engines develop a rather annoying valvetrain racket at about 75K miles. The fanboys will now extoll the virtues of the Japanese Rambler, but the reality is that the BRZ would be 1000% better if it had a smooth Toyota V6 rather than the noisy boxer engine.

The flat engine may not be as "smooth" as a Toyota V6 but it sits low in the chassis which gives the car a lower center of gravity and therefore better handling. So why would a V6 be 1000% better if stuffed into a BRZ? It would be heavier and get worse fuel economy. And Subaru styling these days isn't really worse than other vehicles in the same price range.

Better torque characteristics...better NVH...but your comments were 100% fanboy.

Yep, the styling is typical Subaru conservative. But I commend this brand for continuing it's pursuit of it's own niche: Value, more choices for manual trans, 4WD for everyone, alternatives to black interiors, love the flat-4 engines, turbos available...
And consumers are on to it. The sales are soaring. Let's not discourage Subaru for stepping outside the box in a sea of the mundane.

I agree with MattDarringer but I also fear the next generation of fanboys will now be AMG45 drivers and I am sure that the four pot engines will not stand up over time.

The WRX is one of the best performance cars on the planet and comparatively inexpensive! Practical with AWD, 4 drs. and seating for 5-the styling is not pretty but brutish with purposeful fender flares, the interior could be better, especially the seating position of the passenger on the current models, without a manual seat height adjustment, you sit kind of low. But other than that, great car with excellent resale value, what's not to like?
