Who Needs A Supercar? Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Takes Down LF-A And Ferrari 458 Lap Times At Nurburgring
Ever since Chevrolet stunned the NY Auto Show by unwrapping its 2014 Camaro Z/28, we’ve been waiting to see it do something special at the Nurburgring. Now, Chevy has released a vid of the track-focused Camaro lapping Green Hell in 7:37.47.

While that’s a good way off the Porsche 918 Spyder’s sub-seven time, the Camaro Z/28 remains in good company. The 991 Porsche 911 Carerra S clocked it in 7:37.9, the Lexus LFA in 7:38, the Corvette ZR1 and Ferrari 458 both posted times of 7:38, while the Lamborghini Murcielago, Mercedes SLS AMG, and Ford GT all came in at 7:40.

Nice!! Sign of the times...gone were the days when seconds seperated supercars from plebian sedans, muscle cars, etc. Now we are coming to an age where just about any car can perform at super car levels. Soon the only thing left for bragging rights will be top speed. When will this madness end :-)

This is a Track-focused Camaro.

With a focus on lap times, much of the sound deadening and audio system has been removed, while air conditioning is optional. The Camaro Z/28 is 300 pounds lighter than the supercharged ZL1 model. Other track-oriented updates include thinner rear glass, shocks featuring individual adjustment of bumper and rebound settings for both high- and low-speed wheel motions as well as 305/30ZR-19 Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires — possibly the widest front tires available on a production car — on all four corners. GM claims the Camaro Z/28 can pull 1.085 lateral g average and up to 1.5 g in braking with its large Brembo brakes.

As I can recall, The Lexus wasn't in stock condition either. Just suck it up. A 50k performance car just beat a $375k performance car around a racetrack.

your "recall" sucks.

Well the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package runs at 7:14.64, not too mention 7:18.6 of Nissan GT-R, or 7:19.63 of Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, so I don't know what's so impressive about this lap time.

Also, Green Hell favors understeer set up, which won't translate well to driving on surface street, so I wouldn't measure a car using the this laptime alone. Everything is contextual.

Kudos to GM! This is noteworthy indeed for "Top Dog" awards.

Very cool. I used to have a 1970 Z/28 and loved that car. It actually handled pretty good for the day! Nicely done Chevy!!!

I still love the LFA though. Congrats to GM though! Well done.

No longer can smug exotic car owners claim that American cars "can't take the twisties"....

To be honest American cars such as the Corvette has always took on the Ferrari's since the 80's. True story.

Am I missing something here? I just check Wiki for Nurburgring lap times and I see the LF-A has a lap time of 7:14.64. Unless we are going back in time and comparing times for 2010.

@ monster
You just beat me to it. I recall reading something about a 'track-focused' LFA lapping the Nurburgring in less than 7:15.

Because people would actually care. If I were in the market for a supercar, I sure as hell wouldn't cross shop for a Camaro.

Still a huge difference between speed and quality........
