I think this segment has always been the battleground (granted, with average prices increasing). The range from the mid-trim entry level to the lower-trim mid-level cars (i.e. 328i to 535i or C250 to E350) has been the bread-and-butter for a long time. I'm not sure it's hotter now than before, though since it's always been highly competitive. The only car major changes that I can think of is that the Acura TL is not a real factor at the moment but was, in effect, replaced by the ATS.

its true that this segment has always been the battleground but i dont think the battleground has ever been filled with so many "equal" fighters.
