UAW Trust Standing In The Way Of US Alfa Romeo Debut
Ever since Sergio Marchionne snuck in to see the "The Graduate" as an underage teen in the 1960s, he's had a soft spot for Alfa Romeo, the maker of the Spider Duetto convertible Dustin Hoffman's character drove in the film.

Four decades later, Marchionne is the CEO of Alfa Romeo's parent Fiat S.p.A. and wants to return the struggling brand to its former glory. To pull it off, he needs cash from Fiat-controlled Chrysler Group LLC. The problem is he hasn't found a way to get it, as a union trust that owns the remaining shares holds out for at least $1 billion more than the CEO wants to pay.

I am beginning to think that keeping Fiat from getting all of Chrysler is in the best interest of Chrysler. Marchionne is a bumbler. The Dart was a dud. The Cherokee is ugly. The 200 is overdue by two years. Alfa Romeos are Fiats with different bodies. NOTHING is standing in the way of Alfa Romeo returning. The Mito could have been in Fiat dealers long ago. The Alfa Miata will come from Japan.

Fiat, like Mercedes before it, wants to bleed Chrysler of its assets and then bail. I'm beginning to think that a merger with Mazda or Hyundai/Kia would make infinitely more sense. Ring up Toyota even. Heck, even dim witted VW would be better than Fiat. A VW-Chrysler merger would give VW its first clue as to what Americans want from their cars. That's a win-win.
