Is the Cadillac ELR too expensive? Many people believe this!
The Cadillac ELR coupe will have a sticker price of $75,995, including shipping, when it becomes available for sale in January 2014. The plug-in hybrid’s hefty price is more than twice that of the Chevrolet Volt, which shares the same underpinnings \\

Oh Cadillac...did you learn nothing from the XLR? which you tried to position as an SL competitor and it was demolished by the SL. Now you launch this 2 door version of the disastrous Chevy Volt and charge 80K???
STOP IT

"A Cadillac spokesman, however, said the ELR’s sticker price reflects its “specialty nature” -- “a unique car in terms of its very dramatic design, advanced technology, luxury appointments and more than 300 miles of range."

The ELR has a 300-mile range because it has a GAS TANK.

BFD.

Yes, it's too expensive. It costs as much as a Tesla, and almost twice what an i3 costs (if GM wants to talk about "specialty nature", "advanced technology", etc., the i3 is made almost entirely of carbon fiber and aluminum -- the ELR by comparison is just a reskinned Volt with two fewer doors and a shield on the grill). The ELR is DOA.

Why bring up the i3? Because whether you like the looks or not it's plain and simple a revolutionary vehicle for $41k, which the ELR claims to be for $75k but isn't. Is that simple enough for you? Or do I need to type slower so you understand?

I'd rather drive a Tesla.

It indeed sounds quite expensive. That being said, as a value proposition, who knows if it's worth it. It's certainly beautiful, and despite underpinnings similar to the Volt -- I have read nothing so far indicating that ELR is only a badge-engineered Volt -- I am willing to wait and see.

If we are looking at a case of badge-engineering exclusively, the marketplace will quickly show Cadillac the error of such an approach.
