The way Chevrolet tells it, General Motors design chief Ed Welburn told his team the company “might” revive the Stingray name if they did a great job on the seventh-generation of the Corvette. It’s a good story, and every time I heard it, my cynical journalist’s heart said, “Yeah, right” and I sneered a little.

A week with the four-star 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray wiped the sneer off my face.

The car is stunning. Its design, performance and fuel efficiency raise the bar not just for the Corvette, but for luxury models that cost twice as much.

You are assuming he means avant garde. But that still doesn't make sense. There is nothing avant garde about corvette's challengers. That would b a complete misuse of the term. Maybe he means old guard. But the corvette is older than its challengers. 009 has no idea what he means. Shocker.

AvantGuarde is clearly Porsche,Mercedes,Ferrari,Aston Martin, Jaguar, Maserati, Lamborghini etc.The offer performance and handling with refinement,interior quality and history.Your right in that they are the old guard. In fact other than Lamborghini they are all a older than Corvette.Up until the new C7 no Corvette offered the refinement and interior quality that even approached these other makes.The new one comes the closest by far.

Ah mini. I regret to inform u that u, like 009, are still mistaken. First, it's AVANT GARDE. Second, there is nothing avant garde about this class of factory mass made sports cars or the others u mentioned. (Think Avanti for avant garde. See what they did there.) You guys should avoid big words if u can't spell them and don't know what they mean. Finally, corvettes compete with cars like 911s and vipers, not Ferraris, lambos and Benzes, so OLD GUARD doesn't work here either, as vettes are the oldies in their class.

Yes, the base C7 does challenge the following "avant garde" models:
1. 911 S
2. M3
3. SL-AMG
4. Aston Martin Vantage
5. Maserati Coupe

Now, what is shocking to me is that this is only the entry level C7. What will be amazing are the high powered versions of the Stingray that will be released over the next 24 months. Now we are talking Lambo/Ferrari numbers: 0-60 in under 3 seconds.
