With BMW, it seems the company takes one step forward then two steps back.

For example, it decided to finally update the nomenclature to make things less confusing for buyers. Two-door models would get even numbers a la the 4-Series, 6-Series, etc., and the four-door saloons would remain odd numbered a la the 3-Series, 5-Series, etc.

BUT now the Bavarians have decided to build a foor-door "coupe" dubbed the 4-Series Gran Coupe and the 6-Series Gran Coupe. Right.

Actually, as noted in a previous story it seems that the spy photos of the upcoming 4-Series Gran Coupe seemed to depict a vehicle that's more bulbous than we would have liked. In fact, it looks strikingly similar to the 3-Series Gran Turismo. And while that's a vast improvement on the 5-Series GT, it's not going to win any design awards any time soon.

There is some good news though. From the looks of things from this FIRST clip of the 4-Series Gran Coupe in action, it will be a performer.

See what I mean below...

The 2014 BMW 4-series GrandCoupe has returned to the streets for a new round of testing giving our spy photographers another chance to get up close and personal.

First thing I'll admit is that I think this will be the best-looking of the 3 or 4 Series bunch.

That being said, I wish that BMW would give the GCs more distinct styling than their sedan/coupe counterparts. The CLS is easily distinguishable from the E. The A7 is easily distinguishable from the A6. With BMW's GCs they seem to carry identical (or any differences are virtually indistinguishable) front and rear styling as their sedan/coupe counterparts.

This would be what I would be replacing my 3 series with as I want 4 doors (need to fit a carseat) and want some of the 4 series options (LED lamps). The car also looks lower and wider so ~5k premium is worth it for me.

Either that or an M4GC :)
