Because Mercedes is a one-trick pony (i.e. only premium cars) it really needs a more mainstream automaker to be in partnership with if Mercedes is still to be around 25 years from now. Audi is insulated by VW. BMW is flailing with the Mini, but should probably merge with Honda or Mazda. Mercedes has shown it is a BAD partner. They "merged" with Chrysler when Chrysler had money and then saddled them with garbage level cars and used Chrysler's money to fund Mercedes research. Once the cash dried up, they spit Chrysler out.

More than likely a Chinese investor would ultimately own Mercedes and that would be karma biting Mercedes as it deserves to be bitten.
