Does Cadillac Have The Ability To Become The American BMW?
After having driven the superb new Cadillac CTS the question begs to be asked, where does Cadillac go from here? The True Believers at GM – and when I say the True Believers let’s be very clear I’m not referring to “Captain Queeg” or “Amway Bob,” the arrivistes who are quick to take credit for Cadillac’s current resurgence – have been at this reinventing Cadillac thing since as far back as 1998, when the division was staring at The Abyss.

Back then Cadillac was in its death throes, a hulking shell of a car company masquerading as GM’s luxury brand. Cadillac had been lost in the land of vinyl roofs and whitewalls for so long that they became resolutely out of touch with the world. And after having been asleep at the wheel with the cruise control set to “Oblivion,” they awoke only to find that the world had changed around them and that their heretofore loyal customers were either dying off or flocking to buy cars from Audi, BMW, Lexus or Mercedes-Benz.

American BMW? You are kidding, right? The all new Cadillac CTS is already the best mid-size sedan on the market in terms of performance, and BMW can try for hundreds of years, but their overpriced, overrated X5 and X6 will never become the true status symbol like an Escalade.

Wrong. The X5 and X6 are REAL status symbols. The Escalade are for those who need WANNABE status symbols.

WRONG X2!

The Escalade was never a status symbol, only an owner's declaration that they not only have bad taste, but they are also a poser.

The X5 and X6 are no longer status symbols. X5 stop being a status symbol when the people started buying used 6-cylinder models.

The X6 was only a symbol of bad taste as a consumer, not of status.

The only Cadillacs with status have a "V" pasted it on it, and it's more respect for the engine than status.

The only BMW's that have status have a "M" on the rear decklid.

I actually test drove one when I went to the SF International Auto Show this past weekend. Compared to the previous CTS I've test drove, I did feel a sportier handling. However, when I tried to push the car from a complete stop or when I wanted quick acceleration, the car felt heavy....so there is still work for them to catch up on.

Well the 5 series felt heavier (and that is what most of the reporters say)...so YES Cadillac already have all the necessary stuff to change the game..Also 5 , E or even A6 are heavier.

It already is! What Cadillac does best is NOT being BMW. The last CTSV is pure American muscle car and much more engaging than the technical but boring perfection of an M5. The way to beat BMW is by NOT trying to beat BMW and create a compelling alternative.

If I remember correctly - the Cadillac slogan was NOT "The standard of the world" - it was "An AMERICAN Standard for the world" - and that is precisely what Cadillac should be - technically as good as anything out there - but Distinctly AMERICAN as well.

The Cadillac Mission should be to make AMERICAN a good thing again

I agree with some of the other commenters. Caddy's success right now is coming from being as good of a purchase as BMW while at the SAME time being distinctly American and not copying anybody else.

The only thing stopping Caddy is lack of a flagship vehicle and mediocre marketing. Audi has the R8 and I honestly see it too much it shows up in too many summer flicks.

Why would they want to? Maybe pre 2010 BMW's but the current crop of BMWs are nothing more than really nice German Lexuses. With the exeption of a few "M" models of course.

When Cadillac can get ALL of the details done right, then we'll talk about how good Cadillac really is. Driving dynamics shouldn't be the only measuring stick by which a great car is determined. You see that slowly happening with the ATS. It came out of the blocks like a banshee because it drove beautifully. But the cracks in the lustre started to shine. There are details that are being criticized about the CTS, but they are currently being overlooked by its tremendous performance. Eventually, its cracks will start to become the focus.

I'm not trying to knock Cadillac, as I am actually rooting for them. But what really tends to frustrated me with American cars is that they can never seem to put together a true, complete package.

As long as Cadillac put hydraulic steering back they can beat any comparable BMW. But before that happens I'm staying w/ my Bimmer.
