Did Ford MISS A BIG Opportunity To Deliver Something MUCH More WILD Than The 2015 Mustang We're Seeing?
Today marks a special day in automotive history as the very first shots of the 2015 Ford Mustang leaked online via subscribers of Autoweek. As expected, the photographs that grace the cover and inner pages show a vehicle that seems to blend a bit of the latest Ford design language together into the currently existing, 60s-inspired 'Stang.
But when it all comes together, it seems to leave me — and Agent001 — wanting more.
I was talking to the big cheese earlier and there just seems to be some panache missing. This Mustang doesn't make my heart beat faster and 001 made a great point: The Giugaro Italian Concept was FAR more interesting. After he dug up some old photos from the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, to me, it was spot on. If you
really
look at the design it has just enough to make you say "Wow!" but it isn't so far removed from what a Mustang
should
be.
When I see the pictures of the 2015 Mustang, I can't help but think this is the Fox body part II! And, in the words of 001: "It took seven years to get to this?"
All that said, I am intrigued to hear what the Spies have to say about this. After all, you're the tastemakers and we trust your opinions.
What say you?
Did Ford MISS an opportunity to do something AWESOME and WILD

Ok but boring exterior, dreadful interior. Very disappointing overall.

That's a 2010 concept. The 2012 and beyond has a 6 speed. I am sure the new one will at least have 6.

I agree with you Agent00R, Ford definitely missed a big opportunity here. I just couldn't believe it that they had that unique design showcased in 2006 and after 7 years came up with something in the opposite direction.
In my opinion, that sexy rear from 2006 should at least be slapped onto the 2015 to cover the blunder they have committed with the front.

No, not a great design, but you can't really expect Ford to stray too much from what's made the Mustang popular and a legendary nameplate. If they strayed too much, they would be smart to create a new model name, like they did with the Ford Probe.

Guess I'm in the minority but I think the real car looks better than the concept. I'm not even sure what you guys like so much about the concept -- 90% of that was never making production no matter what. And I'm surprised you're not fawning over the real car. If you removed or blacked out the red bumper trim separating the upper and lower grill and then drew a chrome surround around the entire grill, you know what you'd have? An Audi. Seriously, someone with photoshop skills try it and see. I assume that was intentional, either way I think it's a good looking car. Coupled with the weight loss and new IRS it should blow the doors off the Camaro.

The Giugiaro Mustang previewed the 2010 pretty much. The 2015 Mustang is a stylistic BOMB. It looks way too much like a Fusion or Taurus up front. The greenhouse is as ugly and smashed looking as that of the 370Z. The small greenhouse make the tail look flabby. The fish mouth is dead wrong. The general lack of heritage makes this a very nice Probe, but it's NOT a Mustang.

The Giugiaro car is a very attractive car. However it's strays too much away from the "American Muscle Car" look. The Mustang is a pony car. it has always been a pony car. True the 2015 now has a more corporate look then before. However all of Fords car now have corporate binding design that they used to not have. At least in the Mustang the grill is wider and more aggressive. It is more than acceptable. I'm just wondering how the GT will differentiate from the standard V6 car. The side profile to me speaks 66-69 fastback. I especially like the way the rear lights slant out. From the side the styling makes the car look smaller than it probably is.The rear hunches are more pronounced now. So I have to disagree with most of the posts and say the 2015 exterior is a success.I do not like the interior at all, however. This is an area where Ford decided to stay way too retro. So intead of a graaceful redesign and a more simplitic look of the Fusion and Lincoln, Ford has kept the same retro dash and jamm packed full of more doodads. Frankly it looks way to busy and stupid. It would be nice if Ford alowed you to order a Mustang without "mytouch" but i think that is just wishful thinking. The car appears to be lower than the previous car.A good thing as at nearly 56 inches the 2014 seems suited more for geriatrics rather than as being a sports/muscle car.The car should be quite an improvement to drive.
