STUD OR DUD? BMW M3 And M4 Breaks Cover For The First Time

STUD OR DUD? BMW M3 And M4 Breaks Cover For The First Time

The BMW M3 returns as a saloon only, and with turbocharged six-cylinder power for the very first time. The adoption of turbo power dispenses with 26 years of BMW M division tradition of using high-revving naturally aspirated engines for the M3.

Pictured here in production car guise for the first time, the new 425bhp four-door M3 saloon will be joined from the outset of sales in 2014 by the M4, a mechanically identical but stylistically sleeker two-door coupé previewed in lightly veiled concept car guise at the Pebble Beach concours in California in August.

The fascias, both front and rear, are just not attractive. Almost reminiscent of some of Lexus' recent over-styled attempts to be expressive. Side vents on the front fenders look good.

The BMW M3 looks just like a smaller BMW M5. BMW has taken the same sausage different length philosophy to new heights with its current lineup.

Most importantly, how will these new M3 and M4 cars drive? If it's anything like the BMW M5, BMW is screwed.

"same sausage different length philosophy"

This coming from a Audi guy.

Awesome! ... Love the Phoenix Yellow in the coupe.

Germona - the competition M5 has been received very well. The M3 will dominate the segment, just like the previous M3 did by only besting the New Audi RS5 in 4 of 5 comparisons ...

Hate the ALWAYS Up NAV screen. Why is this so; the other BMW models have done a very nice job to hide or make their screen disappear. Still using run-flat tires??

Personally I like both cars. Great.

They both look a hell of a lot better than their non-M brothers/sisters. The sedan looks best of the two.

While the coupe does look good in the videos I've seen, closer in proportions and looks to the E46, the coupe still looks a little chunky to me. It does not look as big as the E92, but not as focused as the E46.

Either way, BMW needs a new design language for their interiors. These interiors look almost 20 years old.

Front and rear bumpers/fascias are waaaay too busy and tacky. The interiors while okay don't break any new ground. I'd give the new m3/4 a C. No new ground here.

@MorePower - you have summed it up about the interiors, for why I bought my last BMW several years ago. As long as people think high usage of plastic is ok in an $75K plus car, they'll continue to build it. If owners email or write the big cheeses at BMW, maybe they'll reconsider building it with those features. The salesman at BMW (test drove an X3, Benz and Audi SUVs for wife) said that run flat tires on the cars years ago because a study group in EUROPE said they were preferred tires. Must have been the SAME group who thought Americans did NOT like cup holders. Come to find out the majority of past or current BMW owners HATE the rough riding, expensive to replace run flat tires.

I'm liking the sedan over the coupe, maybe it's the color of the coupe turning me off... nicely done BMW

Much better than a cheap rebadged vw Jetta "audi"

Looks SOOO nice from the side, but man, the front and rear views are hideous. I like the regular 3 and 4 much more.

Uuuuuuurgly! So very uuuuuuurgly! Boring outdated interiors. Boring outdated cars for the 'sporting driver' of yesteryear. This 'menacing' design is such a yawn.

The M4 is clearly the better looking of the two. It just looks faster. I prefer its taillights and the sloping roofline. The next Audi RS5 better be well thought out otherwise it will lose to these formidable BMW sporting vehicles.
