Toyota Ponders Adding Truck Capacity In San Antonio

"Dealers are telling us they could sell more Tacomas and Tundras," Toyota Division General Manager Bill Fay said. "We are evaluating our footprint and capacity."

Toyota can produce a combined 250,000 Tundra full-sized and Tacoma compact pickups in San Antonio, running two shifts plus overtime and Saturdays, Fay said. Toyota's knockdown assembly plant in Tijuana, Mexico, can add another 50,000 Tacomas, but many of those trucks go to Mexico and Canada.

hmm.. why? I was looking forward to this redesign but the fuel economy is horrendous when compared to the competition. Reading forums, people aren't even close to the epa ratings. Averaging 13-14 is most report. The tech is out there and Toyota uses some of it in their current vehicles. Why they didn't carry it over is a mystery. Most don't buy these with fuel economy in mind but 5-9 mpg is a big difference. 1-3 mpg wouldn't be a thought but that's just bad product planning. Toyota needs to lead in fuel econ to give buyers a reason to break from the domestic offerings.
