RENDERED SPECULATION: BMW's Next-Gen 5-Series Gets Imagined
When the F10 BMW 5-Series made its debut it was a departure from the avant-garde, Bangle-era E60 5-Series. To be straightforward, though I know a lot of folks LOVED the E60, I hated every millimeter of it.

Those Dame Edna headlights were the worst.

But the F10 brought back a more traditional BMW look. It was stately, classy and looked a bit like the much loved E39 that was once declared "the best car, ever."

So, now where do the Bavarians take the 5'er? Well, there is no crystal clear answer yet although we have seen spy pictures of the next-gen vehicle undergoing development.

These initial renderings do provide one idea of how BMW may choose to play it safe and give the 5 an evolution rather than a revolution.

That said, what do YOU think of these preliminary renderings? Too conservative? Just right?

So, the 5 becomes the 7, the 3 grows to become the new 5 and the 1 becomes the new 3.

The F10 is a nice looking return to form, and these rendering are also appealing, but the main issue is how the platform sharing with the 7 has lost the 5er's edge dynamically. It is no longer the class leader. MorePower is right, the 3 is the new 5, and the 5 and 7 will both struggle with the new S.Shame about the 3 also loosing it's edge. BMW really needs to fix the 3 so it's driving dynamics are best in class, or the brand will slide towards undifferentiated mush.

Mercedes is taking risks and is turning out garishly ugly designs. Audi and BMW are finely tailored and tasteful. If this is what the new 5 will look like, YES!

Well Matt sorry to burst your bubble but Mercedes is currently the best selling luxury car manufacturer in the USA and outsold both BMW and Audi worldwide in the month of Nov. So if ugly designes are what is driving Mercedes sales I say roll out more ugly designes.

When will this new 5er be released? Shed some weight, get back to the driving dynamics that made you "Best In Class" a few years ago, and I will "consider" this vehicle again. BTW: German-Lover: The E class has got to be one of the UGLIEST sedans in that segment. I switched from a 5er to an Audi 6er (love it) because of the lost driving dynamics in the 5er sedan. Interior wise the Benz is very nice; exterior looks like a dang block of cheese. I'd buy the Cadillac (that's not saying much) before I'd buy that ugly E-class distorted front nose thing.

BTW gkearns56: Looks are always subjective. I think you totally wasted your money on a car that looks about as appealing as paint drying. Does that mean anything to you? No and it shouldn't. Just like your opinion matters little to the over 8,000 individuals who purcahsed the E in Nov. The e-class will be redesigned prior to the A6 or 5 series. It's the oldest car in it's class and sells the most. Either way you look at it the car does really well for Mercedes.

Many of you seem to be forgetting that Audi is going to launch an all-new aggressive and differentiated design strategy with the upcoming 2015 A4 sedan, which will be shown in April of 2014.

The 2015 Q7 will be the first SUV in Audi's lineup to receive this aggressive and differentiated design treatment.

Audi is adamant on following through with this change:

Audi also changed it head of design:

Expect bold and exciting changes ahead from Ingolstadt as Audi aggressively narrows the sales gap with BMW globally.

@Germanlover: I wonder how many of those 8000 in November are LEASES. I bought my wife a new GLK since because she liked the smaller SUV size. It was about a month ago. The salesman ask if I would consider trading in my Audi 6er for an E-class. He said they have "the best leasing specials going on, now until January 2". Benz is being aggressive with their leases. It's not a car I would prefer to own. I prefer the the 6er or 5 series, rather than my dad's car.

@gkearns56 Leasing is the main way that ALL the germans move their cars for the most part. I guess that was your stab at Mercedes for moving more "grandpa cars e class) as your "grandpa car the a6". I'm sure if you asked Audi would they like to lease as many A6's as Mercedes does the E-class' the answer would undoubtably be yes. The fact is Americans tend to like the E-class better than the A6. That could be said for the brand as a whole. Americans like the star more than the rings. It's a fact. Look at the numbers. We arn't talking eco boxes either. We are talking about 50+ thousand dollar cars.

When BMW was building its business into the world class brand it has become it would introduce a new design direction every third generation. Lately it seems like they are on their thirty third variation of the same theme. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Wake me when there is someting to get excited about.
