Toyota To Streamline Lineup - What Slow Sellers Would You Cut?
Toyota brass have been studying the automaker’s U.S. lineup over the past year and some changes are coming, Bill Fay, group vice president-Toyota Div., tells WardsAuto in a wide-ranging interview here.

Toyota earlier this year announced it would discontinue the rugged body-on-frame FJ Cruiser. Production is to cease at Toyota’s Hamura, Japan, assembly plant in mid-2014.

Fay says the FJ Cruiser, while popular among off-road enthusiasts was the victim of flagging sales and the need for a hefty investment for a thorough refreshening.

For Toyota overall: Land Cruiser (Toyota does not need one in addition to Lexus), Sequoia, FJ, Venza, all Scions (The FRS can become a Celica), Lexus GX, CT

You do realize that without some of those Toyota models, the Lexus versions would cost to much to be a viable product . . . ?

CT200, FJ, possibly the 4Runner, Prius V, Matrix, Yaris,iQ and Xb.

The Highlander would be renamed or given a 4Runner package.

The roots of Toyota's and Honda's problems are easy to understand. The plain truth is that they've lost the youth market, big time.

For a long time, they had cars young people really wanted, as well as the family sedans, trucks and SUVs for families. They had BOTH markets.

Now, all they have is the latter. Scion - Toyota's attempt to draw in young people - had some initial success, but is now considered to be a major flop.

Honda never should given up the small, sporty segment (S2000, Integra, etc.)

These companies made some really bad decisions they are now paying dearly for. Plain and simple.

It's not rocket science.

Too many SUV's and low volume small cars. No reason to keep both Yaris and Scion xB. iQ and xD could be retired. Thought the FJ was outsourced and based on 4Runner, so should only be dropped when platform update forces it out. Sequoia could go when platform change is due. Venza may just need a new grill and mpg improvement.

Cars.. Corolla (hybrid, sedan, and hatch), Camry (hybrid, sedan, possible wagon/all road type offering to replace venza and Rav), and Avalon as it is.
SUVs... Highlander (as it is), new bigger badder 4runner..
Trucks.. Tacoma (gasser and diesel!!,), tundra (update drive trains)
Minivan... Keep it. Moms would go AWOL

If you wonder why I eliminated Prius line, I haven't.. Eliminate scion and make Prius it's own brand. It's ugly and like Saturn, needs to be in a corner by itself.. It is good tech though but just don't see why they dont use it in their normal good looking cars and SUVs.

To explain my 4runner and land cruiser elimination... Don't delete the name. Just make one big SUV platform. Have a shortened version called the 4runner with all the great off road tech. Have a slightly longer, high end, true 3row, called the land cruiser with options to load it down with off road tech. Could launch special editions for the purists. V8, diesel, and gas options depending on the calling.
