Will Ford's Aluminum Bodied F-150 Be Tough Enough Or Just A Glorified Beer Can?

Will Ford's Aluminum Bodied F-150 Be Tough Enough Or Just A Glorified Beer Can?

Get ready for Ford's aluminum pickup, likely either to be hailed as a breakthrough product or one that draws scads of comparisons to a beer can.

Ford is going to announce in a couple of weeks that the next F-150 will have a body made mostly of aluminum instead of steel in a bid to save weight, and thus gas, says Bloomberg News, citing unnamed sources. It also reported that Ford is going to great lengths to invite comparisons to the aluminum used in military vehicles, not in flimsy beer cans.

I like the idea of an aluminum F150 - ambitious.

But Ford, c`mon! Dont cross-reference the stalwart truck with a "beer can". They should have mentioned that Jaguar's XJ has been aluminum for years and an aluminum vehicle is possible & so the aluminum truck was inevitable - weight savings, rigidity, etc.

Agreed. I like the attempt at change. Just needs to be executed well. If it's flimsy, it will fail. If it's durable, holds a finish, it will be a winner. Repair costs will be interesting.

hopefully it wont be just a new front end like the current F150. The super duty hasn't changed since it came out in 99. All they do is keep changing the front end and keep putting a bigger grill on it. Everything else on the body is carry over. the doors on a 99 will bolt right on to a 2013 with no mods. I have a feeling they will just put a front end similar to the Atlas concept and keep the same carryover cab and bed with new tail lights.
