BMW And Toyota Finalize Sportscar Platform Architecture
BMW and Toyota have agreed to develop a joint platform for sportscars, BMW's development chief Herbert Diess told a German newspaper.

"We have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car. What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands," Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung today quoted Diess as saying.

BMW and Toyota in June 2012 signed an agreement to cooperate on various areas including lithium-air batteries and lightweight technology.

Supra needs to competes w/ GT-R & NSX, so doesn't go with Z4. Besides, the latter can easily be based on modifed 1/3 series platform.

I'm guessing a Z6 :)

Sources indicate yes to both.

The Supra DOES NOT need to compete with the GTR and NSX, except in the fantasies of JDM fanboys driving 20 yr old NOSsed Civics. The business case for a Toyota model at that price point simply cannot be made.

If it wears a Toyota badge, it needs to compete with the 370Z, Mustang GT and Shelby, Camaro SS and ZL1, and Corvette BECAUSE that is where it would be most profitable for TOYOTA.

Making it compete with the GTR would be to make the same MISTAKE Nissan made. The GTR should have been an Infiniti NOT NOT NOT a Nissan. Accordingly, the GTR is a profound sales dud because it is priced like a Porsche, but marketed through dealers appealing to WalMart shoppers.

The 911 outsells the GTR in North America by a factor of 8.

Expect something revolutionary, that neither currently has mastered, maybe a carbon fiber reenforced plastic chassis. Sports Car means low volume and expensive model, so expect a Lexus model.

That then begs the question of a Supra. Might that be a reskinned BRZ with a superior Toyota V6?
