STUD OR DUD? Mercedes GLA 45 AMG Breaks Out Ahead Of Detroit Debut

Destined to become the crown in the new GLA line-up, the all-wheel-drive compact SUV uses the same turbocharged 2.0-litre engine as the A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG, meaning outputs of 355bhp and 332lb ft of torque.

The engine is mated to the AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission, which allows drivers to choose from three performance profiles named Manual, Sport and Controlled Efficiency. The latter mode is geared towards maximising fuel efficiency, and also activates the car's stop/start function.

While this won't sale near as much as the A45 or CLA45, I think it has potential. It's practical enough and could pack some serious fun for the family guy who is over minivans or the hot hatch fans.

Definite 'stud'. Looks fast, sporty, with some practicality from a gear hauler perspective. I am torn between selecting this, or the Porsche Macan as my next vehicle.

I wouldn't expect the AMG model to be a volume pusher, but this is a goodlooking car.

I would prefer this to the A45 AMG because of the higher ground clearance and hence seating position. One gets a better view of the road and in light off roading it is easier to handle undulations. The car looks better than the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Porsche Macan. If I was shopping for a fast compact SUV, this would be it.
