Audi R&D Chief Commits to Laser Headlights: Says Brand Will Be The First To Use in Production Vehicles
Now Audi is pushing the laser-lit envelope. R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg has announced that Audi will be the first company to bring laser headlights onto the road. “We will be the first car brand to put laser light into production,” he said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The brand’s laser-diode technology is being showcased on the Sport Quattro Laser Light concept, which was revealed last week.

“The future—and that’s what we talk about at CES—is in laser light,” Hackenberg said. “Laser light is even sharper, safer, and more efficient. These headlamps are three times stronger than LEDs.” Hackenberg also reaffirmed that Audi’s R18 e-tron Quattro that will contest this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans will be fitted with the lighting kit.

Enough already. I think their current lights already should be banned.

3 x brighter than Xenons? What effect does this have on oncoming traffic? Why is this necessary for night driving? If you need something this bright to see while driving at night, maybe you should get your eyes fixed or stop driving at night for the safety of others. As it is, some Xenons are way brighter than they need to be. I think there should be some limit on the brightness of headlights. However, I would not mind a single xenon headlight in the trunk lid that could be deployed temporarily to deter chronic tailgaters:)

By the way, the R18 eTron is a racing car, not an Audi production vehicle. The article doesn't indicate what this production model is or when it will go on sale . So, what 2014/2015 production vehicle from Audi will be equipped with this tech and when is coming up for sale?
