DETROIT AUTO SHOW: MORE Pictures Of The All-New Porsche 911 Targa
As we already noted, one of the debuts we were looking forward to was the all-new Porsche 911 (991) Targa. Why? Well, that's because it's our favorite 911.

I know, I know. There's plenty of detractors that question why not just get the coupe or the convertible, but that's what makes the Targa special. Not to mention it looks cool as hell.

Now, if I am honest, Porsche definitely complicated things with the sophisticated power targa top. It seems as though the top uses similar mechanics as the cabriolet, but of course, it has that large glass rear greenhouse.

The old 911 Targa was by far the best looking variation and the new Targa is the only Porsche I would lower myself to own.

"Lower yourself" to own?

Jeez, I didn't think it got ANY lower than a TVR ;)

Hmm this car looks nice, but I still think the new Subaru WRX STI looks a lot more beautiful than this.

Dude the WRX STI is not an attractive car, you only like it because it is Japanese. If it were from anywhere else you'd be honest and say that it's just a giant disappointment with its rubbish styling and carryover powertrain. It's one of the sorriest "redesigns" Subi has ever done.

Great comparison to "usmuscle", hmmm a Porsche and a Subaru; which one would I want to have.

As for this Targa, it is just a dumbass car. Highly complicated (read: brittle and expensive to fix) mechanism to hide the roof. A silver roll bar thing that looks all out of sorts. A glass rear that doesn't gel with the rest of the vehicle. Sure it's retro so that makes it "FUN" but it doesn't actually work with Porsche's current design language. Why waste the money when you can just get a 911 ragtop for less.

This is an example of Porsche's current idiocy. This is not form following function. The original targa was created in because of the absence of a convertible option. In 1967 the Targa version was introduced as a "stop gap" model because Poarsche thought the NHTSA would outlaw fully open convertibles in the US. That's why the Targa with its giant stainless roll bar was born. What function is this car design serving? None. Other than a nod to history, which the vast majority of current Porsche buyers could care less about. I'm equally concerned about the insane instrument panel, centre console and more buttons than a Texas Instruments scientific calculator... ugh.
