Insurance Companies Expect Aluminum Body On F-150 To Raise Premiums By 10%

The Ford F-150 has been the best selling vehicle in the U.S. for 32 years and the best selling truck for 42 years! While the design has changed over the course of half a decade, the American automaker remains true to the F-150′s legacy of offering power, style and affordability. It’s this unique combination that keeps drivers coming back for their new truck purchases.

But there’s a dark side to the company’s upcoming 2015 F-150 model: according industry analysts, drivers can expect a 10% hike in their insurance premiums when driving this vehicle. 10% may not seem like a huge amount, but that comes to roughly $150/year on a $1,500/year premium. So, why is the 2015 Ford F-150 causing such a fuss among insurance companies?

If a 700lb weight savings is suppose to equate to better mpg then how come a regular cab truck does not get much better mpg than a crew cab since the difference in weight is about 700-800lb? A 2015 crew cab aluminum should weigh what a 2014 steel regular cab weighs....

The short answer is that Ford optimized the platform for the crew cab based on previous sales history.

Optimization would include power-band efficiency of the engine, gearing, weight distribution, aerodynamics, etc.

A bold step by Ford, and I hope it pays off. I'm not a pickup guy, but if I were, I would want the Ford. I see a lot of full size pickups out there with just the driver and hauling nothing. 5,000+lb vehicle, really?
Another benefit should be a better experience behind the wheel.

Hmmm... Just a thought. People don't mind spending $30-50k on these trucks. They also bought them when 13-14 mpg's was the normal. Are people really going to be turned off because of a $12.50 per month insurance hike??? I think Ford will sell a lot of these.

I would be more concerned about paint peeling off or how fast corrosion eats holes in the rockers.
