NEW Details About The Next-Gen BMW 5-Series Emerge, Is It Starting To Sound Like A Winner Again?
While we've been impressed with previous BMW 5-Series, and we were when the all-new F10 was introduced, it quickly faded into the background when cars like the Audi A6 and Lexus GS were introduced. Let's face it, BMW is starting to change quite a bit and move away from its original driver dynamics in favor of a more broadly accepted luxury car feel.

That's not a bad thing but definitely an alienating one for folks looking to buy "the ultimate driving machine."

Thanks to our friends overseas at CAR magazine, all-new details about the next-gen 5-Series, codenamed the G30, have come out. Whether or not these details are speculation or not is beyond us at this point.

BUT, it brings up an excellent question: what do YOU think the next-gen BMW 5-Series will NEED to rise to the top in its next iteration?

Frugal three-cylinder engines, a 600bhp M5, and the ability to drive itself – the next BMW 5-series will offer something for everyone, even those people who don’t like driving.

Codenamed G30, the sixth generation of BMW’s exec saloon arrives in summer 2016. Bookended by a 5-series Gran Turismo that spring (yes, BMW is having a second go at the hippopotamus-arsed hatch-cum-limo) and a Touring estate in the autumn, the saloon will adopt an all-new platform packed with technology.

The BMW 5-series will need to increase its level of interior luxury and sporty driving dynamics. Unless it achieves both of those things it will remain behind the Audi A6.

In terms of sales, the 5 series is well ahead of the A6 and only remains behind the upper middle class darling, the E Class, which also happens to be the oldest in the segment.

I hope the 5 series steps up, the styling was a welcomed departure from the bangle era but has ironically fell victim to premature aging, driving dynamics have isolated more than connected the driver to the road, and interior while functional is not special

The 5-series outsells the A6 in the U.S. but globally the A6 outsells the 5-series.

Either way the styling will need to be more aggressive, the interior more luxurious and the driving dynamics more connected and sporty.

"but globally the A6 outsells the 5-series."

Do you bother to to look stuff up?...Apparently not.

Audi A6 Global sales

2011- 241,862
2012- 284,888
Jan-Sept of 2013- 215,292

BMW 5 series Global sales

2011- 332,501
2012- 359,016
Jan-Sept of 2013- 270,292

On average BMW sells 25-30% more 5 series, than Audi does A6s globally.

@MercedesSL, thank you very much for exposing this 'nutter' now branded as an unreliable participant who spews biased, unverified and grossly misleading information

Oddly, BMW doesn't really need to do much to keep it a sales success. In the US, its raw sales numbers are behind the E Class, BUT, the E Class numbers include its coupe and cabriolet. So, sedan-for-sedan, the 5 Series, might sell better than the E Class sedan. However, it's probably very close.

@MercedesSL, do you have global numbers for the E Class?

E class

2011- 338,386 1st
2012- 310,408 2nd
Couldn't find 2013 (most likely 1st or 2nd)

Thanks, MercedesSL. I guess that explains why MB felt the need for a facelift after the 2012 results. Looks like the E-Class ended 2013 with 242,562 deliveries, however, noting that the facelift occurred late in the year.

Everyone bad mouths the 5GT except the people who own one...it's styling may be challenged but a 7 series chassis, huge interior, higher than a sedan lower than SUV advantages (easy of entry/exit plus high sight line), hatchback utility and 5 series pricing make it a real winner in the real world. I will be a buyer of next redesign !

The current 5 series looks good but the interior is small to me. It's expensive too. As far as the upcoming car goes I already refuse to spend 50k on a 4 cylinder anything, so a 3 cylinder...I think not!

The customer base is changing just as Cadillac came to grips a decade or so ago with their big sedan de whatever's... While we praised cars such as the E39 540i 6-speed and the M5 "beast", nowadays more people are getting excited to hear cars can drive themselves. That's something no true driver will ever accept. But our numbers dwindle as the next generation finds the iPadesque changing color dashboard, lane correction steering, and everything by wire to be where they want to spend their money. BMW has the choice to either make another "drivers car", price it high as it won't be made in volume, or try to lead the change to whatever the next generation thinks they want from a premier brand.
