Biden Boldy Claims "If People Can't Join A Union, People Won't Get Fair Wages"

Biden Boldy Claims

Vice President Joe Biden defended the role of organized labor, saying opponents are mounting a long-term war to attack unions.

“These guys on the right — they know without you there — they call every shot,” Biden told more than 1,000 UAW members and retirees on the final day on its four-day annual political conference here. “You guys are the only guys keeping the barbarians at the gate.”

He criticized right-to-work laws approved in Michigan and Indiana. “Did you ever think you would see a day when right to work would pass in Michigan?” Biden said. “It’s not a right to work.”

He held up a chart that said the fall in unionization had been a factor in the decline in wages.

For a vast majority of working individuals, he is right! Besides a World War that left many of the planet's highly technical production facilities blown to bits, the American economy grew on the backs of organized labor.

Now organized labor is killing the economy as it siphons money from workers that have NO CHOICE but to pay and all of that money goes straight to the Democrats. Job conditions are NOT better. Wages are NOT stronger. The unions represent the Democrats stealing from people pure and simple. It's time to ban all unions for any political activity and be constrained ONLY to negotiating contracts.

we can ban unions from political activity after we ban corporations from political activity.

Nice try at birdwalking the point through misdirection. Epic fail. Neither unions nor corporations should be able to buy elections, but the unions financially rape their members much more than corporations.

You need to blame free trade. Not Unions. America was fine before free trade agreements sent millions of jobs overseas for cheap labor (read exploitive).
There needs to be a balance. We have seen how well corporations treat their people before unions. Its documented fact when you get around to checking those types of things.

" Job conditions are NOT better"

Really? let's take a look a few accomplishments of labor unions

End child labor

Establish the legal right of workers to form unions and collectively bargain for wages, benefits and working conditions

Establish the 8 hour work day and paid overtime

Win workers' comp benefits for workers injured on the job

Secure unemployment insurance for workers who lose their jobs

Secure a guaranteed minimum wage

Improve workplace safety and reduce on the job fatalities

Win health care insurance for workers

What's killing American job's is a flatting of the worlsd economy and outsourcing of job and improvement's in automation for a very few . Any talk of domestic economic deseve more than a fifteen mintue view of history. As far as money goes, what if the Republican to money from big business (a lot that outsource jobs), big oil, or Big Pharma, oh wait they do.

I don't understand why it's so easy to villanize the middle class and loinize those making millions.

Exactly. Lets also note how American's wages have been stagnant or declining for the past 40 or so years. Most manufacturers in America pay their workers in the $9-17/hr range. which works out to 18 to 35 thousand a year. Essentially it has create a permanently impoverished lower class. They cannot afford to further their education, and cannot bargain with their employers because the job market is not forgiving for these people.

If they want to be able to earn a decent wage, they are going to have to be able to collectively bargain. Employers are not going to raise wages when they can simply dismiss the worker and replace them with ease. The labor market is heavily stacked in employers favor, so workers need to be able to unionize and level out the playing field.

unions are not for everyone, but they certainly benefit everyone.

i don't intend on ever being a part of one, but recognize the stability they offer a large part of the working class.

a stable working class is ripe with consumer spending

They benefit only the Democrats they support, the unions that is, not necessarily their members. In a global economy containing costs and expenses are critical, its business 101. Companies exist to enrich their owners and reward investors, employees are an expense, benefits are expenses. But paying benefits to good employees to retain them is also an expense, but necessary to keep the quality people. They offer no stability as in a global economy, mfg plants can be closed and moved to lower cost areas. Employees need to ensure THEY are leading edge, that THEY provide value to their employers, that THEY are irreplaceable. No doubt unions were effective 100yrs ago, but no longer, they are a cancer and the biggest unions are state, fed government unions, which should be illegal.

Taxpayers pay taxes for services the market place cannot or will not provide. They don't pay taxes because its fun, they are compelled too. Employees of the Govt have no right to extort from the taxpayers more than is fair to push paper and serve the taxpayers. Up until 2008 this was a free country and if you don't like your job or career you were free to change it to improve yourself. Govt unions need to be outlawed. How fun will it be when we're all compelled to use public transportation and then the unions go on strike? It shuts down the cities, the nation. Its not right.

Why is it that unions are once in, always in? How not have the members re-certify them every 2 years so they are more focused on their members vs extortion from the employers, and from using the dues for their own political purposes? Why is the UAW in at the big 2 and they are ALWAYS in? Why cannot the members de-certify the UAW?

Joe Biden has been in Congress since he was 29 he has no clue what its like to work a real job, nor his boss who hasn't had a real job in his life either. These comments are simply rhetoric to rile up their base. Unions do nothing but erode team cultures in the workplace and create an "us vs them" environment.

Oh and Reaganeatbrains (should be "ate" brains) the Supreme Court has said that Corporations are people, and thus can participate in the Political process. This was done DECADES after the unions were allowed to participate in the process, thus the playing field is now level. Why should a union (supposedly representing ITS members) be allowed to buy Democraps, and Corporations (representing THEIR employees and interests) not be allowed?

We already know what industry does when not countered by a Union presence. Having worked in both environments I can tell you there IS exploitation without representation. I also make way more as a Union member and job stability is the best I've ever had.
If you think Unions are great that's fine. They do have their problems. If you want to blame wages falling and jobs leaving the US its not the Unions fault. Its the greed and political will that sent the jobs overseas to exploit a 3rd world countries labor.
If you don't agree then look up the labor history of Foxconn. Modern day slave labor making iPhones and iPads.
Mass suicides at these plants.
Btw union dues cost me around $400 year. But I make $20-30k more a year in the Union doing same job I did as a contractor before joining the union.
Its not perfect but it is working for me better then the first 20 years of my career.
