CHICAGO AUTO SHOW: STUD or DUD — Is This Mercedes-Benz Color Scheme HOT Or A HOT MESS?

CHICAGO AUTO SHOW: STUD or DUD — Is This Mercedes-Benz Color Scheme HOT Or A HOT MESS?
Although it isn't much of a focus for most publications, we're pretty keen on unique color combinations. Of course that's only if they look good, that is.

The reason we're so big on unique color schemes is because they can really make or break an all-new product. Think: how much better does a Porsche Panamera look in Yachtling Blue or a Mocha Brown over, say, white? It makes a big difference for that particular model because the darker hues hide the vehicle's ungainly lines.

Now at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show we stumbled upon one particularly interesting example from Mercedes-Benz. Sporting a golden, champagne-like exterior color, this E550 Cabriolet featured a dark blue leather interior with contrasting tan piping.

While the E-Class Cabriolet is not new to the market, this new combination put together gives it a much more exclusive look that's sophisticated. It's a very high brow selection and reminds me of a Bentley for some reason.

That said, am I alone here?

Is this Mercedes-Benz E550 Cabriolet HOT or a HOT MESS?

That color combo isnt' working, or it may be the lighting. Maybe if the exterior and the tan interior were both a shade lighter it might contrast better with the blue. But from these pics it just looks dull.

Did MB already redesign the just-redesigned headlights?

For the first time I have to disagree, this color scheme is actually very attractive and for some reason fits Mercedes Brand. It's unique enough to stand out from the normal black, grey, or white, but not too much like Red or that Tan color.

Well done Benz

it's beautiful.

that champagne color is one of the best Benz has ever offered - very classic.

speaking of colors - anyone notice green largely no longer exists (outside of British cars)?

I think greens didn't have very large take rates outside of the 1990s.

Very nice! I really like the two tone contrast between the dark leather and the tan color + the nice tan colored stitching or piping on the leather gives it that fine attention to detail and shows off the shapes of the seat and other areas of the interior. Good job MB! — cidflekken they redid the entire front end including the bumpers as well + the back end tail lights and bumper I believe and possibly the sides a little.

Mercedes is the epitome of tastlessness inside and out. It's gaudy and vulgar.

It's beautiful. I'm not sure what the 'controversy' is. And the options should be 'fierce' or 'hot mess'...and the answer would then be 'fierce'!

Good to see a different colour scheme than boring black on black.

Hater... Bad color combo' low resale. Never looks good or as cool as a triple black car. Get your weight up son.
