RENDERED SPECULATION: Would A BMW M4 Gran Coupe Be BMW's Latest Four-Door Coupe's Saving Grace?

RENDERED SPECULATION: Would A BMW M4 Gran Coupe Be BMW's Latest Four-Door Coupe's Saving Grace?
Last week BMW released the FULL details of the all-new 4-Series Gran Coupe. Following the lead of its older brother, the 6-Series Gran Coupe, the 4'er seems to take a slightly different direction.

That's because if you look at the 6 GC it's readily apparent that it's not making any excuses for lacking some headroom and keeping a relatively svelte shape. When you get inside, it feels like a coupe.

Now that's where it seems the all-new 4 GC will differ. That's because it looks like the research and development team intended on making headroom a priority in a vehicle that's supposed to be svelte. Instead of a sleek "coupe" we get a bulbous greenhouse.

And that's a problem.

It's an even bigger problem when its greenhouse looks far too close to the 3-Series Gran Turismo, which has been highly controversial. If this wasn't already confusing enough, BMW also equipped the 4 GC with a liftback in the same style as the 3 GT. What gives, already?

If you do the calculus not a whole lot makes sense. I don't BMW's trying to be formulaic anymore. it's a land grab out there for market share. That said, when a talented Photoshopper drew up an M4 Gran Coupe I sort of chuckled and said to myself "Well, at least the 4 GC would be good for something!"

Is this a completely ridiculous idea or a certainty given BMW has provided buyers with an M6 Gran Coupe? Would an M4 Gran Coupe be the variant's saving grace?

The only problem with producing a M4 Gran Coupe is the reality of buying a M3 for, in all likelihood, less money.

I have no doubt a M4 Gran Coupe will look better than a M3, but BMW would need to sweeten the pot with more than "exclusivity".

i expect in this price category, the mere style upgrade will warrant the $3-4k upgrade.

could it cannibalize the sedan sales? sure. but i don't think any manufacturer will complain if a more expensive iteration steals from a less expensive one!

So, that picture with the article, at first glance, i had no idea if it was a 3 Series sedan, a 4 Series GC, or a 5 Series. Not sure that's a good thing.

Regarding an M4 GC, I say go for it. BMW already has tons of models, why not add another to the mix?

BTW, I saw a new 4 Series coupe on the road yesterday. It really looked pretty mundane, surprisingly so. I was actually surprised i was looking at a new 4 Series.

It's not a good thing that car enthusiasts such as you and I can't tell the difference between BMW's models. I, too, was confused at the picture above and could not determine if the vehicle was an M3, M4 Gran Coupe rendering or 5-series sedan with some after-market body kit on it.

Audi fortunately has realized the drawbacks of making all its models look the same with the only difference being length. That's why Audi is moving away from the same design different length philosophy starting with it's 2015 Audi A4 and Q7 models.

The 4-series coupe does not look nearly as aggressive in pictures as in BMW's renderings. I've seen one on the road in FL and was not impressed by it.

German, All the Audi's look the same. I was just at the autoshow in Chicago and the A3 looks like the A4 which looks like the A6 and the A8.

I think the car looks really good. like a smaller 650xi Gran Coupe which most journalists say is the best looking 4 dr. coupe in the market

Forget the M3 sedan, make it an M3 station wagon (estate) when in M3 guise, and a sedan when in M4. So if you want a regular 3 series sedan it's there, but a midsized M sedan has to be the M4. The only M3 available would be the station wagon.

What is going to be the difference between the M4 Gran Coupe and M3 Sedan?

Buyers will have the option of having two high-performance sedans with nearly identical looks and will have to pay a premium for the one that has compromised rear passenger head and leg room.

What a great strategy.

i think sales numbers for m3 vs m4 gran coupe should be interesting. im pretty sure mose people will prefer the m4 over the m3 for the sleeker looks, and bragging rights maybe ( i have an m4 sounds better than m3) but for same performance, and better deal, m3 wins.
