Tesla Model S VS Cadillac ELR - Which One Gets Your $80K?

Tesla Model S VS Cadillac ELR - Which One Gets Your $80K?

Americas biggest and smallest car companies have squared off in the luxury electric vehicle market. GM vs. Tesla. The Cadillac ELR vs. Model S. Old Money Detroit vs. New Money Silicon Valley. These chiseled competitors caused a sore neck epidemic at this year’s Detroit auto show. Displayed in neighboring stands, they turned heads left and right, faster than a Federer vs. Nadal Wimbledon final.

I ached to get them outside to strut their stuff. But it’s the dead of winter, you say. It’s too cold for batteries, you say. Shouldn’t we wait until springtime? Nawww. Not even the Polar Vortex can chill our lust for these hotties.

So bundle up, turn on the heated seats, and unleash the electrons.

Comparing just on the aesthetics alone, the tesla blows caddy out of the water. ELR doesn't look premium, it should be priced between 40-50k.
Performance-wise it's no match either. Safety/reliability aren't proven yet vs the highly rated Tesla.
Tesla wins, no contest.

The Tesla drives very well. If the ELR drives anything like it, the gas generator concept makes it the winner for me.

Let's see, a ground break, stunning performing electric car or a tarted up 40k volt?

Is that really a question.

I can't imagine anyone picking a Volt in Caddy skin over the Tesla. Better performance, looks, customer service, the 17" touchscreen, double trunks, free super charging... it's a no brainer.

This whole "Volt in a Caddy skin" nonsense needs to stop. Reason being, there's nothing wrong with the Volt.

Cars share chassis underpinnings all the time. As long as what the vehicle is based on is solid, then I can see no issue with it being shared with other divisions in a company (nor does any other auto maker, considering that they all do it, to varying degrees).

It's hybrid gas/electric technology is some of the most advanced out there, and from what I have seen (in pictures and videos, as opposed to the wild) it is more attractive than the Tesla.

In fact, the only area that the Tesla beats the Caddy in any definitive fashion is the amount of horsepower it has (which Caddy could have easily countered by either using a more powerful 4-cylinder engine, or with the addition of turbo or supercharging)

This is admittedly something that Cadillac should have taken account of before introducing the car, though I suspect it will do better than naysayers thing, mainly because it's designed to be a niche vehicle.

And speaking of which, without knowing the numbers that Cadillac expects–short of single or double-digit sales numbers, it's hard to say whether or not it has failed in its mission.

Cadillac. Tesla is a confidence scheme.

According the the story this article is based on, the Tesla has one significant advantage over the Cadillac:

And that's horsepower (I don't even want to talk about that iPad they call an information center because I can just see the day someone spills a soda on it, being that it's so remarkably huge).

The ELR, despite having more power than the Volt, just doesn't have enough to compete with the Tesla.

If you look at other metrics however, the ELR competes admirably.

Easy answer...Tesla. I don't understand why the Caddy has to cost twice as much as the Volt.

SuperTurtle, you're right there is nothing wrong with the Volt. It's a fine car for its price range. The ELR however is joke for the price. It's not just horsepower, the Tesla is a much larger car with substantially more room (heck it can seat 7 people with the optional 3rd row) and it blows the doors off the ELR in terms of performance despite the size and weight. It has an insane amount of storage space to boot. So it is a much more practical car, not just a faster one. The infotainment system is the best ever put in any production car, the fact that you have not mentioned that leads me to believe that you have never been inside of a Tesla before. As for the service... when it is time for Tesla's annual maintenance, someone comes to your house or work, drops off a top-of-the-line Model S as your rental car, and takes yours for maintenance. I doubt the Caddy will be up to that level.

I have to admin that I like the style of the ELR, but put it side by side with a Model S and I think the S still comes out way ahead in the looks department.
