Volkswagen's Chattanooga Employees VOTE AGAINST The UAW — Is This A Paradigm Shift Or Simply Politics?
To be straightforward, I'll readily admit I am not a political scholar. I know business, technology and cars. That's it.

So when I heard that the UAW was trying to get involved in Volkswagen's Tennessee operations in Chattanooga, it was interesting for me. Having never had friends or family members work in a union it's something I am not entirely familiar with. Some media reports are in favor, some are negative.

If one lesson can be learned from union involvement though, it's that though they claim to operate in the worker's best interest, that's not always the end result. Look at what happened when the unions didn't back down and Hostess shuttered its bakeries. And, need I really point to the domestics and how they were hamstrung by unions for years until recently?

Now what do I make of VW's employees voting "no" to the UAW's involvement. A part of me thinks it speaks for itself. BUT, I'll leave it up to you to fill in the blanks where you see fit.

Is the "No" vote against the UAW by VW employees a sign of changing times or is this simply politics as usual?

Volkswagen's press release follows:

VOLKSWAGEN CHATTANOOGA EMPLOYEES VOTE AGAINST UNION REPRESENTATION

Feb 14, 2014

Chattanooga, Tenn. (February 14, 2014) — Volkswagen Chattanooga employees have voted in a secret ballot election against United Auto Workers (UAW) representation. Participation in the election was 89 percent. 53 percent of the eligible employees who voted decided against the UAW as their bargaining representative in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) between February 12 – 14.

“On behalf of Volkswagen Group of America, I want to thank all of our Chattanooga production and maintenance employees for their participation in this week's vote. They have spoken, and Volkswagen will respect the decision of the majority,” said Frank Fischer, CEO and Chairman of Volkswagen Chattanooga. “The election results remain to be certified by the NLRB,” Fischer, said.

“Our employees have not made a decision that they are against a works council. Throughout this process, we found great enthusiasm for the idea of an American-style works council both inside and outside our plant,” Fischer noted. “Our goal continues to be to determine the best method for establishing a works council in accordance with the requirements of U.S. labor law to meet VW America's production needs and serve our employees’ interests,” Fischer said.

Sebastian Patta, Vice President for Human Resources, said: “While there was intense outside interest in this election, our managers and employees inside the plant maintained high quality production and continued to work together in a calm and respectful manner.”

“Our commitment to Tennessee is a long term investment.  We look forward to continuing to work with the State of Tennessee and the City of Chattanooga to support job creation, growth, and economic development today and into the future,” Fischer added.

They are smart. They know all the union brings is high fees to stuff the wallets of union bosses and Democrats, drags down the auto industry, resulting in less investment In better products and capabilities, and usually no increase in wages or benefits. I'm not in the auto industry, but in my business, the union workers make less and have worse benefits than the non-union counterparts.

That's very surprising given how precarious VW is at the moment. Unions have served their purpose and no long protect workers or even do anything to improve workers' salary or job conditions.

Congrats to everybody who voted AGAINST the UAW. My brother worked for Ford Motor Company in Sterling Heights, Michigan for 30 plus years. I NEVER bought a vehicle under his Family plan (and never would). My UAW brother even admitted to me once: "UAW equals an INCREASE in the cost per car since they demand higher wages, usually want more or costly benefits packages and/or higher bonuses from profits. This was the BEST thing VW employees could have done to vote down the union there.

Sounds like common sense to me. Unions for the most part are not that much unlike the mafia with their tactics and mentality where selfishness comes first.

...and the race to the bottom for the American middle class continues unabated. Because we all know the "Trickle Down/ Voodoo " economic theory driving the past 30+ years of concentration of wealth at the very top has reaped great rewards for our middle class workers.

Not.

The Amerifan middle class has suffered more and more during the past 30 years sine Reagan BS'd his economic farce on the American public. And it is a farce as evident by all data available..

It remains to be seen how effective the Republican politician's strategy of directly interfering with a private business matter was in this Tennessee matter ( I suspect some polling firms might investigate). The supposition is that the white American middle class is willing to cut their own throats if it means allegiance to a Republican dogma. They really believe in the anti-union BS despite the fact that Germany is far more union friendly and remains the top manufacturing country on the planet. Japan's powerful unions right now are positioning themselves for bargaining power as we speak and will succeed in guaranteeing Japan worker's economic rights. Both of these countries have higher middle class wealth than the US. But here in America, we learn our economic theory from Koch-funded front groups and Tea Party know-nothings. -just keep white entitlement intact and those nasty immigrants out. And certainly keep those unions from interfering in CEO's and top Exec's getting ALL the money and $$$ profits.

The Trickle Down economic theory works - unfortunately the end result is highly dependent on how much that spigot is opened. In our current economic and political system we know that money buys votes (either Democratic or Republican - it doesn't matter so long as it helps the people donating the money). We also know what we live in a perverse kind of economy where the richer you get the greater access you have to ways of minimizing the taxes you need to pay. We also like to pay sports and entertainment figures considerably more than people who really can make a difference like teachers. Medical malpractice lawyers are allowed to keep a significant portion of the money they win for their clients - who really should be the ones who deserve the payments. (If the client receives a settlement of 1 million dollars, and the contingent fee agreement is for a 45% fee, the client pays the lawyers $450.000 for their fee, and then, from the client’s $550,000 share of the proceeds, reimburses the lawyers for the costs accrued to prepare the case. If costs were $250,000, the the net recovery to the client is only $300,000.) This isn't to say the laywers don't deserve their fair share for the work they had to put in to win the case; just that there is an excessive anount of it going to the lawyer as "contingency fees. The overall effect is to drive the lawyers to persue more cases (in hopes of either winning or settling) so they can reap the benefits while their client only gets a third of what they deserve and overall medical costs goes up for everyone.
I can go on and on but I'm digressing. I don't think this vote against UAW is going to change our economic model though.

we're #27....well below Japan and Germany, and just about every other industrialized country. Every data metric available from every reputable source points to a startling decline in America's middle class compared to the rest of the industrialized world ever since the late 60's/early '70's and the concentrated political attack on unions. Reagan institutionalized and championed the attack on the American middle class with the "Trickle Down" Milton Friedman theory and our economic decline has not lstopped since. (except for a brief late-Clinton era when America was turning the corner and Bush jr. utterly trashed it again).

I didn't expect this, I expected the UAW to cheat, or somehow pull this off. That said, they'll be back next year, and the year after, etc... but if they do why is it they'll never leave? Why is it, once in, always in? The "thing that would never leave". These folks will now probably get the Midsized SUV, because the cancer has been avoided. Way to go VW Employees (not "workers"), you're a part of whats being built there, not a cog in the gear, that the UAW would have you believe. You're employees and team members, not "workers".

Rockhead - keep your head in the sand and keep drinking the kook aide. Clinton was/is a narcissistic DB, his wife is worse and the current is worse the Jimmy Carter. You're clearly a leftist mooron, a true frog! Move to Cuba, we're not a Socialist nation and we don't want any of your collectivist BS. Clearly the USSR, Cuba, North Korea, etc... all good nations with centralized power in the hands of the elite few, clearly the people benefit there. Stuffington Post... great non biased site you're quoting...pathetic! Keynes was right and Friedman wrong, history shows other wise, revisionist toad.

I see, nothing but ad hominem attacks...with no data, no links, not even any attempt to debate the facts. Just pure, blind hate and red herring attacks on me, Clinton, Carter, etc, etc in nothing but a clear attempt to steer any discussion away from related facts and evidence.

You couldn't win a proper debate a 5 year old. Keep with the name-calling and sticking your head in the sand.. you'll fit right in with the right wing as it continues to crash itself right into the ground these days. I can post link after link after link clearly pointing out data and real world analysis about the American middle class not keeping up with the international upsurge in middle class wealth. And these countries are in general far more left-wing than anything Obama has proposed here in America. Keep watching Fox News and the willful ignorance it breeds.
