Lexus is Inferior to Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz

Lexus is Inferior to Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz
We have had some healthy debate over the past few days and I would like to give some reasons why Lexus is Inferior to Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz. The major reason why they are not in the same class is because Lexus does not have an S, RS, M or AMG brand so cannot be considered a true competitor to the German companies.

The reason that German brands are far superior to Japanese (previous Honda owner) is that they are willing to take risks with new design, engine technology, safety, etc while most Japanese brands simply copy them and make it mass market. That is while they may not be as reliable the first year the car comes out, but I would much rather support ideas that are new and move the industry forward rather than is accessible to every consumer possible.

There is nothing wrong with the Lexus products per se but when compared to its German rivals is so weak in every aspect (materials, design, technology) that it is not considered a true competitor. BTW, petigree matters as cars are emotional purchases not basic transportation for many people. Hundai Azera may be a great car but most people will not buy it because of its petigree no matter how great the car is, and this is not a bad thing because a brands repuatation is important for most consumers.

I think the snob appeal argument does not really apply because all these cars cost a lot of money. For example, the IS costs a little more than the 3 series and I think its a folly to say they deliver similar driving experiences. I can see how if someone does not want to pay 20k extra for an S Class or a 7 Series that they may buy a LS430 but only if they are not looking for a spirited driving experience. If I am paying 50k I dont mind paying 70 for all the intangibles that come with the german brands. I have personally driven the IS, the GS, and LS and can safely say that the concept of value for getting a similar experience for less money does not exist. Lexus consistantly gets outcalssed in every segement except for the Landcruiser which is an international success.

I think what it comes down to is two fundamental business models and philosophies about car building. PlanoA4's user profile says "Vorsprung durch Technik", which means "Progress through Technology" in German. This is inherently superior to the Japanese brands sensiblities regarding efficiency and refining but not innovating. We the German car fans think Lexus isn't a true competitor because German brands have been market innovators for 100 years and their cars have character.

I am glad you brought that up because it highlights my point about German vs Japanese brands "firsts". The overwhelming majority of advances in automotive technology has been found by German brands and then refined by Japanese brands. I choose to like Audi / BMW / MBZ not because they are willing to try new things for the benefit of the consumers rather than make a buck after all the heavy lifting is done as far as R&D is concerned. BTW in my personal expereince the notion that German cars are deemed "less reliable" is not credible as I have never experienced a mechanical or design flaw problem (Ahem, MASSIVE Toyota RECALL) and in general better parts and enginnering go into German cars (metal timing belts, not rubber). I would rather give my company that are pionners in their industry and are willing to try new things for the benefit of the consumers rather than make a buck after all the heavy lifting is done as far as R&D is concerned. Another reason is that our local Lexus dealer is a total pompus ass and so my perception is mediocore product and bad service = I am not going to support them.

The reason Lexus is more reliable is that they dont bring meaningful innovation to benefit consumers year after year. Lexus fans play up reliablity, and thats because they dont produce anything new. Ford makes a great sedan with the Crown Victoria and they have their fans but they also have not brought anything new to the table with that car for 25 years. Yes its reliable, but I would not buy one because I dont reward laziness and exploitation of customers that dont know or dont care. Making a good car has nothing to do with heritage and/or whoever came out with a product first, but making a great car has everything to do with heritage and how much risk they are willing to take to benefit car buyers and the entire industry.

In closing, I want to thank you for reading all this text and consider that if you can afford a Lexus, you should consider a Audi, BMW or Mercedes Benz if you value innovation and bold ideas about moving the industry and benefiting consumers rather than not do anything and steal technology from European brands and minting money from it. Lexus fans cannot expect for their brand to be on the same level as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes Benz no matter how hard they try.

Will- Sales equates to nothing other than the number of people willing to part with their money. Number one in sales in one country is a poor indicator of anything other than sales. Remember the Yugo, was number one in sales in Yugoslavia at one time.

So lets separate sales out of the equation and go by technical merits, and the ability to push the envelope and bring to market REAL advances. Imitation may the sincerest form of flattery, but doesn’t cut it in being a leader.

You're right Lexus is inferior to the German brands in Europe. But in the US it's a different story...Lexus has conquered the US. Lexus started from nothing in 1989 and has stormed it's way close to the top of the sales charts in America even though it's barely noticeable in Europe. The US is a very different world to Europe - it's got it's own market characteristics. Buyers are quite different in how they approach car buying and what they think is important.

Europeans are probably more cautious and class conscious in their car buying habits. They are more snobs than Americans to put it bluntly. They prefer old money to new and the established status of the brands, particularly in the higher priced luxury vehicles business.

Personally, I don't think Lexus threatens the German brands today or tommorrow but time may tell a different story. Who knows what a little new investment, new technology and maybe a diesel engine (6 or 8 cyl) might to do for the Lexus brand in Europe...

thing is, i though cadillac was the best selling luxury vehicle in the US.
weren't there some stats a while ago that showed that? (i mean like 3 months ago)
lexus make great passenger cars, but not great drivers cars. i'd see lexus compared with m-b in my mind (light steering, great auto boxes and quiet interiors), if i were them i'd leave the sports handling to bmw and audi, perhaps just stick to shoving a big engine in an ordinary model (like merc does and always did, like the 560 SEC, only recently has merc tried to make a good handling car, it always used to be point the car and shove the accelerator.)
i'm a german fan, but itis wrong to say lexus will never be up there with the german 3.
don't you think bmw was viewed as a pretender when it suddenly made a car, instead of an airplane engine? think how skoda used to be ridiculed, and think how it is viewed now as one of the best (2nd in the top gear survey, after lexus)
things change, you never know, Rolls royce could make a micro car and kia may make a supercar.
bmw used to make bubble cars! does that taint their image?
honestly, if i wanted a small saloon, an IS would be great.

This is funny.. made me Chuckle....

1. Lexus Performance = L TUNE
2. In no way is lexus inferior to BMW/AUDI/BENZ
3. That lacking spirit or soul... drive an IS 350... U'll feel the soul.. or ur balls in ur throat... I promise
4. A fully optioned 330 V a fully optioned IS 350.. 50k+ V 46K max...(my friend just got one; actual sticker)
5. Innovation: To me can be a few things... making something new is always an innovation... making something better a greater innovation(dont hate on Lex for making new Advances from Audi/BMW/Benz technology better.)
6. Standard features... lexus has more standard "luxury" features on their vehicles than the other 3.

I could keep going, but its pointless .. like this thread.. y?.. cause i've noticed that most people here are stubborn and the fact is all 4 produce great cars.. something for everyone.. some more popular than others... rather than fight about who is the best, we should enjoy each different aspects of performance each one brings to the table... because as Auto enthusiasts.. thats what its about ..... right?

Lexus is inferior to BMW, MB, and Audi in the performance segment. Otherwise Lexus has good cars that make them great competitors in market for quiet rides, luxury, etc. Lexus has the best build quality, best reliability, best fit and finish. Lexus has accomplished all of these and people still call them inferior, it seems like Lexus is being called a 1992 Hyundai Excel or something. Technology wise, we should understand that only one person can be the inventor the rest will be copiers. We should say that Lexus is inferior, when compared to BMW, MB, and Audi when it comes to performance.

Also we have to talk about the US because if it weren't for the US all of these car makers would only be making small engines engineered for efficiency and not for total performance.

Also one question how long has Lexus been in Europe?
In Japan it has been one year now right? We can't count a car company out in the first two years. All the Japanese and Korean companies have proved now that they can sell cars too, and in Toyota's case dominate when everyone else looses sales or barely make gains. Didn't we all used to laugh at Hyundai's - now they have better IQ then Toyota. We will have to see where Lexus goes with more performance minded cars in the future. I just think that Lexus should be given a fair chance. In 17 years it has all the Germans scared, what could happen in the future? Maybe someday I will consider buying a Lexus.

One last thing - Just because a car cost a couple of thousand dollars more it doesn't necessarily make it a better car.

It's a neverending battle. The Lexus bashers seem to never wanna stop bashing Lexus and how 'inferior' it is. This relentless criticism seems to get more intense as Lexus keeps getting better and better. Lexus styling has dramatically improved and the new models are selling like hotcakes(in the USA for now, but Lexus is changing it's marketing strategy for the totally different Europe and Japanese markets) and it can only get better with the imminent introduction of the next LS flagship. So, Lexus fans are at the point where we take all these Lexus bashing articles with a grain of salt.(and we, for the most part still respect the German car companies)

"4 the haters" pretty much sums up a valid argument to this post. The fact that the poster is trying to validate their point with incorrect info shows they don't know $h!t about about cars. Everyone carguy knows that Lexus is coming up with their owned tuned up version to compete with the M's/RS's/AMG's. Autospies and practically every other autosite have been screaming this fact out loud for the longest time. And everyone knows that Lexus may be more expensive but it comes standard with practically everything. With the Bimmer's nothing is standard everything is options. Once you add up all the equipment it comes out way more than a similarly equipped Lexus. Do some research before posting false $h!t.

Everything is spin. If Toyota builds a vehicle that does not compete well in the market, they ignore it in advertising. Where are the Nascar Truck Series commercials with Darrell Waltrip? Toyota is not a motorsports powerhouse. They are not a full-size truck or SUV powerhouse either. Toyota does rule the world of "less than 200 horsepower". Toyota also rules the world of luxury rides due to the fact the BMW, MB, Jaguar, Lincoln and Cadillac let quality slip from the late 70's to the late 90's and in some cases are still letting it slip. Racing is fun but this is not 1969 and winning on Sunday does not translate into sales anymore. How many Chevy Monte Carlos are on the road compared to Camrys? If you like a specific car or brand, good for you. But please keep an even perspective. Too many auto journalists are biased and leave out way too much information. The ultimate spin artists that do not let their journalistic integrity get in their way when someone slides them something under the table.

What are the advantages BMW, Audi, and Mercedes have nowadays?

Exlusitivity? -Nope the BMW 318ti and crappy MB C hatchback killed that.

Reliability? -Lexus, Acura, and even Infiniti are far more relilable manufacturers as proved by a decade's plus worth of JD Power awards.

Safety? - There really isn't any current safety device that puts an automaker measurably ahead.

Styling? - Really comes down to personal taste. For every person that knocks Lexus for being too plain, there is someone who will never buy a Bangle BMW.

Performance? - I think the new Tesla roadster blows away everything else near it's aprox. $100,000 price point.

Luxury? - The Mark Levinson system used by Lexus is superior to the lower tier Harmon/Kardon systems currently used by BMW and Mercedes. Audi's Bose systems really don't compete.

Arrogance/Snob appeal? - Here is the sole area where the Euro brands still have an edge as evidenced by many comments by Autospies posters of late.

So not only is Lexus not inferior, they are doing pretty well in today's marketplace.

After reading this lengthy article, I still don't understand how Lexus is inferior to its German counterparts. Lexus inferiority should not arise from personal emotion and preference toward certain automobile manufactures. Where are the facts? Your partiality defeats the whole purpose of this article. That is the reason why I couldn't understand how and why Lexus is inferior to any of the German automakers. Perhaps, the parent compant, Toyota, is the sin. It should have started braching the company into two divisions hundreds of years ago, shouldn't have passed down the Camry realiability for drivers to have a worry-free driving experience, and relocate the entire Lexus operation to Germany.

If you've read any of my posts in this article (my article) you would have seen that I have admitted that Toyota and Lexus is not as innovative as some of the Germanic brands. vcowman,

"Lexus is an illegetimate cash cow for Toyota and I am glad I was able to bring up important points like the lack of a performance division, Crappy design, stealing technology which makes vanilla soulless cars."

Perhaps the only valid point in that statement is the performance devision. It will all change however when the IS500 debuts.

"Crappy design" is always opinionated, but then again this entire article was biased. BMW fans love the BMW's new styling directions, while many others don't.

"Stealing technology" Guess what? EVERY automaker steals technology from one another. Why don't we blame BMW and Audi for stealing every single one of Mercedes' safety innovations? It's alright for every other company to copy ideas except Lexus? You clearly have no understanding of this, which explains why you are not even going to try to defend yourself.

One more thing: The average consumer DOES NOT CARE where a product originally debuted. So long as the product works well they have no problem with purchasing a product. In Lexus' case they areoften times able to take an existing product and make it better. That is what customers care about.

and huu76 where did you get your info from??? the current and old 7-series has been around much longer than the LS and S-class and lexus has basically fused them together to from the LS. also, bmw's designs are ORIGINAL. other carmakers including MB (many vehicles of whom i have little respect for (c-class, m-class, gl-class) have copied BMW'S DESIGN and made it their own. stop acting dumb and face the facts, BMW is much better than lexus at performance and looks (excluding 7-series) and even though lexus' superior quality(which was carried over from toyota) makes them more reliable cars, they still can't compete.

This article has given me a strong idea. We should start incarcerating prisoners in Lexus vehicles. Just seal them up in a new ES for 3-5 model years. Making them sit in a non-German car for that length of time ought to deter future criminals.

hehehehe... BMWexpert... ur funny... i think its cute how Cost = quality in your mind...

And telling me im no one in ur mind... was that to scare me or deter me from replying... heheh.. like i said cute... Like ur BMWs

Oh... and I have opened the door to a Lex and a BMW and noticed that Lexus spends more time on making sure that the gap between the door and frame/body is even around the entire door.. very very small detail.. this my friend is part of quality...

This is gonna be funny... but im honest... One of my friends just got a new M3 convertible and the another one got an IS 350... after riding in both and going completely through the car... I would take the Lex.. much more comfortable and much better interior.. the M might be alittle faster and (stress the little bit)... but overall performance PACKAGE.. IS does it for me... and in case ur curious.. my daily driver is a 350z.. which BTW i have raced plenty of M3s and i dont see what the big deal is about... such an overrated car... 60k+... right... my 04 350z 36k.. and i got the M on the turns... M has me on the straights, but not by much... BMW is OVERRATED GET OVER IT... Im not saying that LEx is the best.. shit I have said anything is the best... but You guys need to realize on thing.... BMW/BENZ might make a good product, but no matter how good it is there is always something better... albeit Lex or not. i dont care... but always something better..

Heheh... u make me laugh everytime... its sooo funny...lets stop the BS and go with some facts:

IS 350: 4 Door Sedan $56,575(fully optioned)
hp/torque: 306hp / 277ft-lb
weight: 3527lbs
0-60: 5.1sec

M3: 2 Door Coupe $70,250(fully optioned)
hp/torque: 333hp / 262ft-lb
weight: 3415
0-60: 4.8sec

Ok, so the breakdown... the M3 costs $13,675.00 more for a car that has only 27 more hp and will get you to 60mph.. just about 3/10s of a second faster(and the M is lighter)... I REALLY SEE THE PERFORMANCE EDGE BMW HAS... and i know y u wanted me to compare to the 335.. cause u just wanna say that the M is superior ... and your wrong... its only slightly better.. and yes I know the new M is coming out and so is the IS 500... i say we pick this up at that point...

BMWexpert...."By the way does the Lexus lights on the Is350 move when turning? Does the lexus have dynamic brake control, brake fade compensation start off assistance, brake stand by DO YOU KNOW WHAT ANY OF THESE MEAN IF YOU DO REPLY BACK AND TELL ME>>>also dynamic stability dynamic traction control and overall BRAKE DRYING.."
---------------------------------

The IS does have:
AFS(Adaptive Front Lighting System)
TRAC(Active Traction Control)
VDIM(Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management)
EBD(Electronic Brakeforce Distribution)

If you want me to explain what each one does let me know...

-----------
BMWexpert..."I am done here and won again and so hase BMW being inferior to LEXUS with no competion to their M MODELS and CONVERTIBLES and not being able to reach the price range of QUALITY cars LIKE BMW AND MERCEDES>"
-------------

Either way your a loser if you think this is about winning or losing.. cause im not trying to convince you that Lex is better... just trying to open your eyes alittle so you dont look so ignorant... only trying to help you...

lights that move are a 50 year old invention (big citroens has had them forever), and now vauxhall are offering it on the new corsa.
it's nothing special.
and brake drying?
put on your own brakes.

00JT- Too bad you feel the Lexus buyers would rather have fluff over substance. Basically if you are here just to make a buck that is fine, but in order for the whole ball of wax to move forward you have to contribute. Those that don't contribute are basically leaches. You have the right to spend your maoney where you want, but my hard earned dollars go to those that can prove to me they have earned it. To spend it any other way goes against my grain.

There are only a handful of people who like German cars better. Where I live, BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes' don't fly off the shelves. They can't sell the SL-class. They have a 2004 SL still brand new on the showroom floor. Lexus however, can't keep their cars on the lot. The ES 350 and RX 400h have never been in stock yet. You have to pre-order them and then wait for a couple of months to even get it. What does this prove? That there are fewer and fewer people in the world who still lick the feet of German car brands. People are willing to wait for their Lexus instead of get a German car because they know that they are getting themselves into something good. The average luxury sedan buyers want their vehicles to be reliable, high quality, luxurious, and a good price for the car. Those are all something that German cars can't give to the average buyers. That is exactly why people like Lexus better. That is why they would rather wait for three months without a car than turn to a German made brand. This proves that there aren't as many German fans out there as you think. And Lexus does take risks. You just don't hear about them because they take risks on their Japanese cars and bring them to this country if they succeed. Look at the new LS-series, there is a camera that can tell if you aren't watching the road and it will stop the car for you after several moments of not watching the road. It has the world's first production car to have self parking, it has a Pre-Collision system in the rear of the car, Lexus takes plenty of risks, they just work out in the end unlike German made cars.

Plano,

I suppose we are different in that aspect. You are willing to spend more money on a manufactor that debuted with a product. The average consumer and I would rather spend less money somewhere else and get the very same product. In some cases Lexus is able to improve on the product.

BTW Plano, last time I checked Lexus along with every automotive company was a busniess. In case you don't know EVERY busniess is in it make money. If you think German car manufactors are just in it for the innovation then those companies should donate their profits to charity year after year. Until I see them doing that I will refuse to believe that Germanic automakers are only in the car game for the innovation.

if you'd read exactly what i'd said and not what you'd thought i'd said you would realise that i didn't say that the c-class or m-class look like bmw's. all i said was that i didn't have any respect for them. for your benefit, the model that i was acually refering to was the new s-class(and if that isn't precise enough for you, the rear of the s-class as seen from the side is purely bmw 7-series).

lexlover
how can YOU say that someone contemplating buying a GS would consider buying an LS when the LS is much more expensive and unlike the GS which is a MIDSIZE SALOON/LARGE SEDAN, the LS is a LARGE SALOON. also note that the words LARGE and MIDESIZE don't mean the same thing when refering to saloons. GS is 205cm(8inches) smaller in length than the LS as well. surely someone considering a GS would consider a 5-series or e-class because of that fault-they are not that different in price (the only difficulty being that the GS doesn't have many varients). that brings us back to the point of the article and sums up rather nicely my conclusion-which is my opinion, not the truth-german brands are better (superior).

"Open a door from a BMW and open a door of a Lexus and you will see the difference in how solid BMW is"

actually, no. the new lexus models are very solid. the new IS is much heavier and better built than the 3-series. that is the one this lexus has perfected-quality. but i agree with yu partially on the steering wheel thing, but only on older bmw's. the new ones look plasticy and cheap looking and don't have that much leather whereas the new LS and IS have beautiful steering wheels.

most else of what you said makes sense-i am an avid BMW fan but will admit defeat when a better quality product is made and the IS is much better than the 3-series.

The equation is quite simple.....German vehicles are like a rolex, they someday will become a collector's piece and end up in a jewlery box.....Japaneese cars are like a timex, they serve a useful purpose but someday will end up in a junk drawer!!!
