REVIEW: 2015 Porsche Macan-Has Porsche Shown The Crossover World There Is No Substitute?
It's always exciting whenever Porsche announces an entirely new model because you know they are somehow going to take the blank canvas and do something special.

It's what they do. It's ALL they do.

So when we got the nod to Lufthansa biz class it to the factory and customer deliver center in Leipzig Germany to test the hotly awaited Macan (Indonesian for Tiger), we pounced on it.

2015 Porsche Macan First Drive

Now before you get all cynical on us and start commenting that all it is is a rebadged Audi Q5, you would be SORELY mistaken.

Turn the key, hit the gas and in 30 seconds you will know this is no ordinary small crossover.

SO let's frame what it is first and what it isn't.

It was said best by one of the European outlets that got to test it before us...

"It's not a smaller Cayenne, it's a larger Cayman."

NOW, do we have your attention?

If you've never driven a Cayman let us inform you that it is the BEST handling car we've ever driven. End of story.

So to fix the only major flaws in the Cayman which are it's lack of interior space, aversion to bad weather driving and NO off-road capability would be a monumental achievement, wouldn't it?

Well that's EXACTLY what Macan IS.

Think of it as a Cayman that is great in even the worst weather that can also kill it off road.

When 00R and I first sat in it at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show we both felt the interior was more intimate than the Audi Q5's and BMW X3's of the world.

What we didn't know is that instead of getting a crossover that drove like a Q5 with less interior space, we would be getting a virtual Cayman driving experience with a small cabin space trade off from those competitors.

The Q5 and X3 are good drivers but in NO way resemble the drive of a sports car.

And that is EXACTLY what makes the Macan so special.

If you buy one you won't be lamenting you should have bought the sports car instead.

Yes, it drives THAT good.

For once, an example where 'RIGHTSIZING' is good!

Best drive experience EVER in a crossover.

But would you expect ANY less from Porsche? We didn't think so.

Oh, and by the way, there is no Cayman TURBO yet.

But there is a Turbo Macan.

And although it is breathtakingly expensive especially when you load it up you'll forget the steep price as soon as you hit the gas pedal.

The S is nice, the upcoming diesel that will come a little later will be great (we did not get to test that but you'll never drive a BAD modern German Diesel trust us) but it is the Turbo that stole my heart.

And for THAT price it should!

There really isn't anything else out there like it.'

0-60 in 4.4 seconds with sport chrono package and 164mph top speed.

WHAT a champ on the track Macan was.

Superstar on track, on road and off-road. Who else can truly claim that today in the crossover market?

When you sit inside it you feel like you're sitting in a Porsche sports car NOT a crossover. The driving position is different than how you feel in the Cayenne.

It will be in USA dealers starting in May so be sure to go to your local dealer and see and feel for yourself.

The standard Porsche color palette is available but make ours red, silver or white with the two-tone red/black interior.

We saw it being produced on the line in factory and OMG did it look HOT!

We normally like black in a turbo Porsche but the Macan has that cool 918 Spyder like carbon blade across the bottom and we like the contrast, hence the deviating color choices for ours.

They also will be offering it in a color called Arum that you see below but after seeing it in person, we would say nicely it was not one of our faves. Judge for yourself though because color is such a personal decision.

The Verdict

Simply the first and best small crossover to marry on road, off-road and track capability as well as Porsche has with this little tiger. We predict Macan will be a huge winner for Porsche conquesting many competitors.

The Good

The first crossover that drives like a REAL sports car. A TRUE Porsche. Gorgeous interior, fit and finish.

The Bad

We wish the exterior design 'EVOQUE'd' a little more glamour, edge and emotion and the Burmeister sound system had the B&O style motorized speakers that lift from the dash on start like in other competitors.

The Ugly

We all have to wait until May in the USA to test drive or purchase one and a lot of us are short the jing to get a Turbo for ourselves.

The Macan maybe the best performing SUV in its class, but it's definitely overpriced whether in S or Turbo form. Numerous other posters have stated the same thing. Price most definitely is a factor in this segment and price range. Take the Macan S for example. The MSRP is $49,900. You're not going to be able to get a well-equipped (navigation system, heated seats, rear-view camera etc.) for less than $56-58K.

That is going to be a $10K premium over a comparably equipped Audi Q5 or BMW X3. While the Audi SQ5 is a better competitor both in terms of price and performance, Audi is not marketing the SQ5 as its mainstream small SUV offering. Porsche, on the other hand, is marketing the Macan as its everyday option for the masses.

That $10K premium is the equivalent of 15-20% increase for $50-60K cars - no small amount by any means.

The Macan Turbo, while better than any other small SUV on the market in terms of performance is also $20K more expensive than any other comparable offering when optioned.

The MSRP is $72,300. With options the Macan Turbo is easily an $80K small SUV. How many buyers will fork over the price of a 911 for a small SUV with extreme performance? Likely very few.

The X3 xdrive35i (6-cylinder) for example starts at $44,900. The Audi SQ5 starts at $51,900.

I'm sure Porsche will sell a lot of Macan's but they would have sold a ton more (and gotten a lot more potential BMW X3 and Audi Q5 owners) if they reduced the price by 15%.

Certain options are always going to be a 'profit center' for the OEM, and Navigation is a good example of this: why should anyone bother with paying extra for it, when it is a Free App on one's Smartphone?

Insofar as Heated Seats & Rear Camera, these are in the Premium Pkg, which means that choosing an S with that and metallic paint, one can be out the door at just under $54K. When that gets compared to the Audi Q5 or Mercedes GLA ... assuming a commensurate performance-centric engine bump for both of these to the SQ5 and AMG 45 GLA versions ... the price gap isn't anywhere near as wide as one would otherwise be lead to believe: much of it comes down to questions of if one really believes that having leather is of critical importance (etc) when contemplating adding more options to the Macan to make it then 'equal' to these sorts of competitors.

Insofar as lowering the price, there's still room in Porsche's marketing plan: the lowest model being offered is the S version, which means that they can put a non-turbo motor in the bay and knock the MSRP down by $5K (10%). However, the bigger question here is _when_ to do this, particularly since one can't ramp a prodution line from zero to a gazillion overnight...nor can the dealership network necessarily also instantly handle higher volume in service bays, etc. As such, some ramping is necessary, plus there's also the business case to consider, from Supply vs Demand: right now, demand exceeds supply, so a manufacturer will reluctantly accept selling only higher tier product so as to maximize value for their stockholders. If one looks at the sales performance of (demand for) the Cayenne, this is why the base version has gone out of production: they're already selling all that they can make.

So applying the same to the Macan, my observation is that for as long as they're selling all that they can make (even after expanding production), they're not going to introduce a cheaper "sub-S" version in order to spur sales volume - - and in that regards, my personal guess is that a "sub-S" is at least two years out.

I think it's priced perfectly for its premium target market. It's not an "entry level" car, but an aspirational car. You don't "move up" from this car to anything else - there's no better handling CUV/SUV, period. You may move up from the Macan S to the Macan Turbo, but that's about it. It is the perfect mix of weight and power in a more useful package than a 911/Cayman. This is the car you buy if you want your spouse to approve of a practical sports car. The GLK and X3 are entry level, and marketed that way. I see now that the Macan is its own destination product, bravo!

GermanNut didn't even read the article, rather focused his essay on price, options and Audi (big surprise here). A Cayman S starts at $63,800 making the Macon S a bargain for a car/miniSUV that handles and performs just a hair away it's two door cousin. Up until the Macan was announced, I would never have bought a SUV since I value, and will pay for, handling and road manners over having my butt warmed and massaged.

Yes, I did read the article, but chose to bring price and options into the equations because they are relevant to how well the Macan will sell.

While other reviews do back up Agent001's claim that the Macan is the best performing SUV in its class, the cost of achieving that excellent performance is certainly steep.

Thank you, Agent 001, for those comments. I'm in - will be trading our Audi TT-S in a Macan Turbo. Perfect stablemate for my R8 V10 Plus, especially after this brutal winter- sounds like the ideal daily driver.

Describing the Macan as a sports car is just ridiculous. It is basically a jack of all trades and a master at none. The high centre of gravity precludes true sports-car characteristics. Cargo space is severely limited so the utility in this SUV is compromised. If one wants a sports car, buy one, not some expensive high-riding facsimile.
