VIDEO: The world's first supercar

James May drives what he considers the world's first supercar. I like to refer to it as the most beautiful car ever made.

Thanks to Luxurious for the tip

people ask about heritage and whether it affects cars, but this car is a perfect example of why mercedes benz is one of the most revered car makers in the world. cars like this cement its reputation as a maker of the finest automobiles.

I have to disagree. I think the world's first supercars were those cars created to break high-speed records and set new ones.

From MB, that would be this:http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blitzen-Benz

The BLITZEN BENZ. Yes I know the link is in German but I couldn't find the English Wikipedia version on it. I don't have a clue as to what it says either.

but those aren't supercars, they're cars that go fast.

Yes, it has been rumoured that that the SLR replacement will share many visual cues with the 300SL.

BMW530i,

Cars that are made to break speed records are just that, record-breakers.

Supercars embody more than just speed, they are the combination of the most advanced technology and sensational styling.

I know I know, but when you consider the limited technology back then, then those cars were super cars. I still stand by my opinion. ;)

BMW530I,
I guess we can all buy that record breaker supercar and drive around town & highways
That makes Murcielagos, Enzos, Zondas & Carrera GTs quasi supercars?
Ten years after its launch, the gullwing was still ahead of most sportcars

MMMG,

I am in no way insulting the Gullwing, I rather like that car myself. But it is my PERSONAL BELIEF that the first supercars were the cars designed to break speed records.

Just MY OPINION. The 300SL Gullwing was a fantastic supercar in its day and it still is.

Jakemiller: HA HA HA HA!! you are hilarious. Obviously pro-Lexus and Anti-Mercedes. You are now for sure a youngin who reads too many online or magazine reviews. 300SL and an IS500 are totally different. Different era and time of engineering. 300SL = Classic. IS500 would be a modern car with technology different from the 300SL.

Don't make me bring up 'history' because we all know you know nothing about that. Go elsewhere and post dumb comments.

Yes, comparing an IS500 to a 300SL Gullwing. I'll tell you something Jakemiller: the 300SL Gullwing will SMOKE the IS500 in DESIREABILITY.
