Volkswagen Plans For World Domination Fade With a 13.8% Plunge In February Sales

Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 27,112 units delivered in February.

“February was an expectedly modest month with the wind down of outgoing models and the fewest number of selling days,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “Nonetheless, we are pleased to see our core vehicles and TDI Clean Diesels continue to show strength in the market.  With a full range of fuel-efficient vehicles, seven of which deliver more than 40 mpg on the highway, we anticipate steady demand as we enter the spring selling season.“

Total Jetta deliveries (including SportWagen) for February accounted for 11,908 units. The Jetta recently received a number of changes for the 2014 model year, including the adoption of a new, 1.8-liter TSI® turbocharged and direct-injection EA888 engine. Equipped with the available new, direct-injected, turbocharged engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, the Jetta 1.8T achieves an EPA estimated fuel economy figure of 36 mpg on the highway, an improvement of five mpg compared with the previous 2.5-liter engine.

The Chattanooga-built Passat deliveries totaled 6,997 units delivered for the month. In February the Passat TDI, the only clean diesel in the midsize sedan segment, delivered 1,696 clean diesels. The 2014 model also received Volkswagen’s new 1.8-liter TSI engine, which offers 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The manual transmission model achieves an EPA estimated fuel economy figure of 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, an improvement of 3 mpg over the outgoing 2.5-liter engine’s highway figure.

Wow the E class, a 60k vehicle, is not far off of Passat sales.

There is something to be said for humility. Listen to the customer, especially those who are not buying your product, and then design and sell products that exceed those needs. Repeat over and over and soon you will find yourself as number 1. VW doesn't understand that versus Ford under Mulally that has been doing that and the results show. Arrogantly announcing that you are going to be #1 guarantees you won't because it is obvious you lack the humility to listen.

With the all new Golf coming later this year, it's not surprising to see sales drop. But VWoA has got to start listening to their core buyers. Several years ago they promised diesel across the line. Where are they?

The problem with VW in the USA is product related and also their foolish arrogance. The Jetta is good, but the Civic, Corolla, Elantra, and Focus are better. The Passat is good, but the Fusion, Optima, and Accord are better. The Tiguan is not in the game against the CRV, RAV4, and Escape. VW has NOTHING in the B segment (Fit, Sonic, Fiesta). VW has nothing in the A segment (Spark, 500, Mirage). The CC is priced like an Avalon, Azera, Cadenza, or a Taurus but is too small. Americans love pickups, but no Amarok. The crossover they needed 10 years ago is just now sort of almost heading for production. There is a new Golf coming, but the US market does not care about the Golf which has always been a sales embarrassment. VW thinks it always knows best and if their idiocy with trying to force the UAW on its workers is any indication, VW has no common sense.

This is painful to watch. And in the meantime they are tweaking cars that about 500 people want in the U.S. Disclaimer: Yes, I am in the U.S. so this is just about their sales here, not in EU or elsewhere.
