Motor Trend Comparison Test: Mercedes-Benz CLA250 vs. BMW 320i vs. Volkswagen CC vs. Buick Regal

Motor Trend Comparison Test: Mercedes-Benz CLA250 vs. BMW 320i vs. Volkswagen CC vs. Buick Regal
The initial idea suggested to yours truly was to line up the Mercedes-Benz CLA250 against the Volkswagen CC R-Line, but the proposal was compelling for all of two minutes. Apart from vaguely sharing body shapes and having turbocharged engines with similar outputs, the bigger, $35K, entry-level luxury question asked was, “Would anybody care?” With its big-money Super Bowl commercial, Mercedes’ hot, new people-pleaser and its alluring starting price has garnered major public attention. In contrast, the CC is perhaps the most visually attractive VW on sale, but it’s no contest when competing for market relevance. Despite dropping into customer clutches for the first time in September 2013, the CLA-Class was just 1560 units shy of besting CC sales for all of 2013 by December’s end, year for year. Of course, sales totals never singly determine a Motor Trend comparison matchup. Nevertheless, a more inclusive rethink was needed.

Because we wouldn’t have access to an MQB-underpinned Audi A3 until a month after our prospective itinerary, we turned to the other natural Germanic competitor. The MPV-like, front-drive BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is tentatively due in 2015, so a suitably priced 320i was chosen. The least expensive BMW sedan you can lease right this instant also, shockingly, starts at $4550 less than a no-frills 328i. You’re questioning the rear drive? Hey, nobody ever specified the entry-luxe formula’s drive wheels.

Looks like the CLA's ride is rough as can be. I wonder how this will impact its sales once the less-harsh and cheaper (when optioned comparably) Audi A3 sedan hits dealers in 3 weeks?

The A3 doesn't have the star for its snob appeal so it needs to be competent to back up its near luxury street cred. from an aesthetic perspective the CLA is a round pig as the A3 is fantastic looking. With Quattro and strong interiors, more than adequate engines (the 250 in the CLA/C Class is crap) the A3 will do just fine. The CLA will need more options to get it to the same levels of "niceness" as the A3 too.... Better value, better looking, more content, better driver, probably less expensive -> to some: less prestige.

4th Place: Mercedes-Benz CLA250 - It'll be a star when rough-riding luxury cars become all the rage.
3rd Place: Volkswagen CC 2.0T R-Line - Beauty craving more substance.
2nd Place: Buick Regal T - Nearly bucked the “3 Series always win” trend.
1st Place: BMW 320i - Prepared for any road, anywhere, any time.

You gotta love that Regal toasting the new CLA and the boring CC. 3 Series will always be hard to beat but try finding one for the price they have listed.

CC shouldn't be even in this comparison. Too old.

Mine was a great car (ZERO issues) but was just too pedestrian to keep my attention for more than 2 years. I like to be different, but the car is too common in the Northern part of DFW. A credit to the two (soon to be three) VW dealers in this area.

CC is a German Honda Accord. An appliance. Surprised that you didn't see that before purchase?

The CLA just looks cartoon-ish.. its even worse in person. It looked cool on the computer when I first saw the productions pictures but to me it looks much different in person

I haven't driven or driven in the CLA but I have driven a new A-class hatch and the ride was also really harsh. The 7 speed auto also can't match the auto in the A3 or the BMW 1-series.

People will buy it regardless but I will say that it will be hard to find any of the Germans in this test at the base price advertised, at least this year.

Although the 320i is more mainstream and has less hype than the A3 and CLA because it's just a new engine whilst the other 2 are "new" body types, and the premium will be higher there.

I like the Regal. It really is underrated. Good to see it get some credit here.

While I do think a small part of the population will cross-shop the 320i with the A3 Sedan and CLA250, I think most buyers will still focus on the Mercedes-Benz CLA vs. A3 Sedan debate. The 3-series, even with the smallest engine, is still regarded as a 3-series, which directly compete with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4.

The A3 Sedan and CLA are both designed to be smaller cars with lower price tags than their A4 and C-Class counterparts, respectively.

I'm excited to see Car and Driver's comparison test of an A3 Sedan with Quattro AWD and the 2.0L 220 horsepower engine take on a Mercedes-Benz CLA250 4Matic. I bet the A3 Sedan will easily win given how well Audi has performed in winning Car and Driver comparison tests with the A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 models.

Mercedes didn't build the CLA to sabotage the C-Class. Its character is much different than what the entry-level C-Class will offer…..by intent. And, it's offers character different than what others in the price range would offer. That's smart product positioning.

Why was the disgustingly dumb CC included? It a Jetta GLI with $10K added on for NOTHING

Well CC is not for here and same goes for the 3 series cause both are different categories. A3 vs CLA , is Ok....Still I prefer the CLA.
