Edmunds InsideLine Claims The 2015 Audi A3 Sedan Is Entry-Level Luxury Brilliance and Easily Their Top Pick. Is The Party Over For the Mercedes-Benz CLA?
Entry-Level Luxury Brilliance

Quick Summary: The all-new 2015 Audi A3 returns, this time as a sedan rather than a hatchback. As a challenger in a resurgent entry-level luxury sedan segment, the A3 delivers refinement, enough performance to make it fun to drive, cutting-edge technology and even a little prestige. Among a small batch of rivals, this new A3 rises to the top, and with a starting price of $30,795 (with the 1.8-liter engine), it won't break the bank.

How Does It Drive?
There's brief hesitation from the automated manual transmission upon initial throttle application, but it's not very intrusive. On the road, the A3 feels solidly planted, yet still light and nimble. Smaller ruts and bumps are absorbed well, though larger undulations can cause uneasy jostling inside. Wind noise is minimal, and road noise is present but never intrusive.

On twisting mountain roads, the all-wheel-drive A3 shines. Not only is it capable and confident, it's also quite entertaining for drivers who value performance. We prefer the paddle shifters in these conditions, as they allow you to keep both hands on the wheel while manually selecting gears. They're optional, but our car didn't have them.

In everyday driving, the A3 is well-mannered and comfortable, with excellent outward visibility. The light steering effort also makes it a breeze to park.

In Edmunds instrumented testing, our test drivers praised the A3's agility and controllability in emergency handling maneuvers, as well as its strong and consistent brakes. The engine also proved capable, pushing the A3 from zero to 60 mph in only 5.8 seconds (5.4 seconds with a foot of rollout as on a drag strip), which is quicker than any other car in this class. On the highway, that power also makes for stress-free passing. We're confident that drivers of all types will appreciate the A3's balance of comfort and athleticism.

I'm trying to think of the last time an Edmunds "top pick" made into my garage...never...Party On CLA

The CLA is not as good. Star Snob...says it all.

The A3 doesn't have the star for its snob appeal so it needs to be competent to back up its near luxury street cred. from an aesthetic perspective the CLA is a round pig as the A3 is fantastic looking. With Quattro and strong interiors, more than adequate engines (the 250 in the CLA/C Class is crap) the A3 will do just fine. The CLA will need more options to get it to the same levels of "niceness" as the A3 too.... Better value, better looking, more content, better driver, probably less expensive -> to some: less prestige.

The A3 would have been nice to look at A GENERATION AGO, it already looks "pre-owned" and it hasn't hit dealers yet

All of the standard equipment sounds great, but guess what kids could get a better equipped Passat, Jetta, Accord, Altima, and Camry for less with more space

Audi misread this market. The A3 serves as nothing but a substitute for its now irrelevant A4 sedan.

Benz hit it on the nail without holding a candle to its own C Class. Want a better ride? Buy a c class, but i have a feeling most people walking into showrooms for a CLA did not come for the ride, they came for the style, the image, and yes that brilliant 3 pointed star

Car4Life: care to comment? The dumpy CLA lost and lost hard.

4th Place: Mercedes-Benz CLA250 - It'll be a star when rough-riding luxury cars become all the rage.
3rd Place: Volkswagen CC 2.0T R-Line - Beauty craving more substance.
2nd Place: Buick Regal T - Nearly bucked the “3 Series always win” trend.
1st Place: BMW 320i - Prepared for any road, anywhere, any time.

You gotta love that Regal toasting the new CLA and the boring CC. 3 Series will always be hard to beat but try finding one for the price they have listed, and nearly lost to a slightly revised car first introduced in 2009.

Clearly Mercedes is aware of the ride quality of the CLA and by it's intent, for the intended mission of hte CLA. If you want comfy and roomy, go elsewhere. if you want something with a bit more style and a "sportier" ride, go with the CLA. Pretty simple.

Although the CLA and the A3 are going to be compared to eachother constantly, I would venture to guess that there is a significant population that is not cross shopping these two cars. CLA buyers are probably cross shopping with true coupes (likely pre owned), do not care as much about all-wheel drive (until 4matic is added), and are looking for something stylish and sexy. A3 buyers are probably considering cars like the 320i xdrive or used A4/3 series, or even apsiring upward from subarus, volvos, etc. The car doesn't have much original design on the outside (interior is fresh) versus other Audis so not as appealing on the style front, and it is a real sedan with more utility with bench seating in back and quattro optional.

There should be no comparision. The A3 is so much better looking. People, the CLA is an ugly car. I've seen a couple driving around town and they look so unproportioned. Not to mention that stupid stuck on Nav screen. It's only hope is when you drop $40k to get one with an AMG package on it. At that point who cares about entry level luxury. Take that same $40k and go buy a CPO C300 4matic and enjoy a real Mercedes. And yes Audi wants it's entry level car to look like it's best seller the A4. So entry level buyers feel like they are
driving a smaller A4/A6.

Love the headline. Unless I missed it, nowhere did I see Edmunds call the A3 "Luxury Brilliance".

You missed it, cidflekken. Look at the sub-headline. It directly says: "Entry-Level Luxury Brilliance"

This paragraph sums up best why the A3 Sedan is Edmunds InsideLine's top choice in the entry-level class:

"Why Should You Consider This Car

The 2015 Audi A3 is our top pick among entry-level luxury sport sedans. It delivers an elusive balance of sporty performance and a comfortable ride. Despite its relatively affordable price, it possesses many of the same luxurious qualities of more expensive vehicles in the Audi lineup. Liberal use of attractive interior materials and a long list of standard and optional features will satisfy most buyers at this price point."

Yes, I did miss that. Oddly, "brilliance" and the article write-up don't seem to be mutually inclusive in this case.

Well, Autoblog seems to differ. They split more 50/50 because of a few issues, particularly rear seat room and options that should be standard.

Sorry Car4Life - just because you think MB can do no wrong doesn't make the CLA a better car than the A3. I've had 5 Mercedes and one Audi, and I think the CLA is not as good. Your love of MB is not a factor... I look forward to driving them both but I've seen the A3 and I've sat in the CLA... from that vantage point its pretty clear. Have you even seen the A3?

I agree, xjug1987a. By all accounts the A3 Sedan is going to be a huge sales success in both the U.S. and China (its two main markets) based on the many early first test reviews by respected car magazines.

No where did I say one is better than the other. Read comments with more clarity.

And Yes I have seen the A3 and I asked how many miles the previous owner had put on it? And they told me it was brand new!

I was shocked!

So 3 series now is for CLA and A3? I guess 4 series is to face the new C and new A4...Well, If we think that Edmunds is Right..

No, Yonder7, there is a new entry-level segment with the CLA and A3-Sedan. The C-Class, A4, and 3-Series are now something like "entry-level plus".
