Federal Crash Data Reveals Over 300 People Died In Recalled GM Cars After Air Bag Failed To Deploy

As lawmakers press General Motors and regulators over their decade-long failure to correct a defective ignition switch, a new review of federal crash data shows that 303 people died after the air bags failed to deploy on two of the models that were recalled last month.

The review of the air bag failures from 2003 to 2012, by the Friedman Research Corporation, adds to the mounting reports of problems that went unheeded before General Motors announced last month that it was recalling more than 1.6 million cars worldwide because of the defective switch. G.M. has linked 12 deaths to the faulty switch in the two models analyzed, the 2005-7 Chevrolet Cobalts and 2003-7 Saturn Ions, as well as four other models.

Not really anything new. The Big 3 of America only produce junk with their incompetent Union workers, and simply, this is the reason why no one cares about the American cars in the automotive world. Only the Japanese and the European cars are considered as the real cars for the enthusiasts (I always found it funny whenever I see an idiotic American saying that the Buicks sell a lot in China. Ooohh, Buicks sell a lot in China!! Good job, 'Murica!! lol), and only the Americans would care about something like the muscle cars.

Btw, it's not just GM. Chrysler is actually even worse than this. There are Youtube videos, too. If you type "Chrysler sucks" there, you prob will find some videos of it.

The real funny thing is that there are idiots who call the Japanese cars mere "appliances". I guess they indeed are, because when the Japanese cars are the real appliances that can be used "anywhere" in "any" weather conditions, the American cars fail in, "everything", and fail to be, "anything".

There is a reason why the Americans chose Lexus over garbage Cadillac or Lincoln. This is because the American consumers want safe and reliable vehicles, not some junk made by idiots.

But why is it that the Japanese cars are generally far superior to American junk? This is because the Japanese care about quality, when the Americans only care about quantity and profit.

There is basically a good reason as to why the American cars are the cheapest, compared to the Japanese and the Europeans.

In your haste to judge, remember Toyota was guilty of pretty much the same thing not too long ago. The simple fact is that big corporations juggle lives vs dollars all of the time.

As 7msynthetic pointed out, I don't remember Toyota's gas pedals having issues turning out to be "true" by anyone. Even NASA engineers worked on it, but turns out, there still is no evidence suggests that there are electrical issues with Toyota vehicles. And yet, Toyota still paid billions of dollars. And not only that, why do you think this was a big issue only in the U.S.? Why did we not hear about the Japanese complaining at Toyota, if ALL Toyota cars have issues?

And basically, that Toyota argument is just getting old to be honest. Can not even be used to defend those Big 3 of junk makers of America since they have been making unsafe, unreliable garbage for DECADES.

There is practically a good reason as to why the super rich Americans only drive the European cars, and the majority of middle class Americans choosing Japanese or German. Why do you think almost no one, I say again, NO ONE, wants American cars in this world?

Oh yes... but you are producing a product with inherent risks hence the juggling. Look at when airbags were first introduced. A flurry of lawsuits because they left abrasions on the face and body. Never mind the injuries would have been far more severe without them.

My attitude might have been I'm hurt in a minor way, but hell I'm alive.

The Toyota issue is different as they still could not find hard evidence against the company and the issues presented AND Toyota still paid up. The GM issue is borderline negligence/criminal as they absolutely knew of the issue and did not fix it until people died. GM is in hot water on this big time. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to pay out more than Toyota.

They figured bankruptcy would shield them. I say go for criminal charges against top decision makers.

GM needs to be charged with murder and the responsible execs need to be tried in court.

Good luck. This is 'Merica, where citizens go to jail for murder and corporations just pay a fine, which they then use as a tax write-off!
