NEW YORK AUTO SHOW? Will Mazda Mark Its 25th Anniversary At The NYIAS With An All-New MX-5?
In a world where two-seater sports cars are not exactly selling like hot cakes, one has to question why Mazda would pursue an all-new Miata — better known as "MX-5" — now. Especially when its volume car — the 3 — isn't selling so hot.

Well, there is a method to the company's madness so they say. That's because most folks agree that the brand equity the car instills is worth the R&D. Do you think the company would be known for its driver-focused experience without the Miata? I don't think so.

As far as we know, the company has teamed up with Fiat to make this a little less painful to the company's balance sheets. Considering the passion the Italians bring to the table and the previous iterations of the Mazda being so pure and raw, we're expecting it to be a hot tamale.

But the BIGGER question here is when will it debut? One would think that the best place to have a coming out party would be at the New York Auto Show. At this stage there's no confirmation.

Given that the rumored engine is a 1.5 4 cylinder, this will continue to be a "secretary special" and will be loved by nail girls. The Miata has ALWAYS lacked the power and torque to make it a real sports car. OK fine, put a wheezer engine in it for the idiots that think that's some holy grail of "balance" but put 250-300hp in it for those of us that know the Miata's legendary "balance" is just a bull spit excuse for Mazda being too lazy and or stupid to make the Miata a man's sports car. I predict the Miata will still be a dismal seller and the Alfa Romeo no wait Abarth no wait Fiat no wait Abarth version will be a real stink pile.

Mazda is suffering from the same thing that has all but killed Mitsubishi. They lost the passion they had when they were selling the RX-7. They went cheap and tried to compete with Honda and Toyota instead of stepping up and competing with BMW and producing a good RWD sedan like the 3 series. Mazda could be sitting in the enviable position of being known as the Japanese BMW with cars that acutally handle. Instead they try to sell Zoom Zoom with just another FWD car that isn't that much different than what the other Japanese brands offer. They talk of passion but I don't see it anymore. A halo car like a replacement RX-7 might help but a Miata isn't it.
