NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: 2015 Acura TLX To Debut In Production Trim At NYIAS — Is Anyone Actually Excited?

NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: 2015 Acura TLX To Debut In Production Trim At NYIAS — Is Anyone Actually Excited?
At this year's past Detroit Auto Show, Acura rolled out the red carpet for its candy apple red TLX Concept car. If we had taken a time machine back to the early 2000s, we don't think you'd really notice much of a difference between the cars it built then and now.

As expected, consumers will have a choice of motors — a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 3.5-liter six cylinder — and a choice of drivetrains. All-wheel drive remains exclusive to the 3.5-liter variant.

The good news is that there are some serious advancements in the transmission department. Buyers will be able to choose from an eight-speed dual-clutch 'box on the 2.4-liter and a nine-speed autobox in the 3.5-liter car. No word on shift-it-yourself transmissions and if they'll be available.

Typically, automakers release initially information to get the press and consumers excited. But, I have to be cynical and ask: does ANYONE actually care?

So, do YOU?

Acura's press release follows:

2015 Acura TLX to Debut at the 2014 New York International Auto Show

TLX to deliver higher levels of luxury refinement and sports-sedan athleticism with thrilling performance

The production Acura TLX performance-luxury sedan will make its world debut at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. Designed to compete in the midsize luxury segment, the 2015 Acura TLX will deliver higher levels of luxury refinement and sports-sedan athleticism with exhilarating performance enhanced by next-generation Acura powertrain and dynamic-handling technologies.

The 2015 TLX will offer two advanced new powertrains – a 2.4-liter 16-valve, direct-injected i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine mated to an all-new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with torque converter; and a 3.5-liter 24-valve direct-injected i-VTEC V-6 mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission.

Two-wheel-drive models, available with either the 2.4- or 3.5-liter powerplants, will utilize the next-generation of Acura Precision All-Wheel Steer™ (P-AWS™) technology with independent left and right rear-wheel toe angle control. The TLX SH-AWD™, available exclusively with the 3.5-liter powerplant, will employ a next-generation Super-Handling All Wheel Drive™ system that is 25-percent lighter and incorporates new torque-vectoring control logic.

The TLX was designed to deliver vault-like quietness in all driving conditions, with major improvements in noise reduction through enhancements to body stiffness, body sealing and sound insulation, and the application of electronic Active Noise Control. The TLX will be available with Acura's most advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies including Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow and Blind Spot Indicator (BSI).

The Acura press conference is scheduled for 1:50 p.m. (EST) on April 16, 2014 inside the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The conference can also be viewed live on www.youtube.com/acura. For members of the media, press materials and photography will be posted at www.acuranews.com immediately following the press conference.

Acura making up for past faults on the transmissions after running the 5 speed for ages. The 4 cylinder makes sense as the TLX replaces the TSX also.

Acura has been dominating the SUV market with the MDX and RDX, but certainly needs to get its swagger back with its sedans. The 3G TL was a huge success, but things went astray with the 4G TL. I honestly think this new TLX will be a hit for Acura similar to how the 3G TL was.

Acura is dominating the SUV market with the MDX and the RDX? muhahahahaha The Lexus RX sold nearly 104K units in the US last year and Acura sold HALF as many MDXs.

MattD-I don't put the Lexus in the same category as the MDX as the MDX is a 3-row SUV and is much roomier. Regardless, you are missing the point if you don't recognize that these two SUVs are performing very well and are consistenly rated in the top of their category by many outlets.

Considering Acura's Facebook page gained about 100k new followers after the TLX concept's debut in January, yes, there are plenty of people looking forward to it.

If the interior of this car is impressive and Acura offers a good choice of optional wheels, then this has the potential to be my next car, the 6-cylinder, SH-AWD version.

A Facebook page's followers is probably one of the WORST metrics. It only goes up and doesn't actually provide any insight.

I could also say that Acura's commercial with the cyborg horses also had something to do with the company's Facebook followers because LOOK, the Facebook page has gotten over x followers since it started airing...

I just have no words for you 00R. You will find any way to refute a fact just so that it fits your agenda. Completely inane.

Let me elaborate, 00R. Yes, a FB pages' followers, in general, isn't a clear indication of which specific models those followers are interested in. However, when there's CLEAR cause and effect, you can't deny what is generating that interest.

The Acura page was stagnant at under 200k followers at the beginning of 2012 (after 20+ years on the market). After the introduction of the ILX, RDX, RLX, and NSX concepts at the respective auto shows at the beginning of 2012, followers increased by about 150k. That's almost double its previous total and you can't say that it was "general interest". Clearly, buzz was generated by those 4 models. The trend continued as followers accelerated a bit when the new MDX was introduced in early 2013 and sales began shortly thereafter.

Now, to the subject of the TLX. Acura's FB page again was rather slow in garnering followers towards the end of 2013, hovering at around 400k. Not until the introduction of the TLX at the beginning of January did the number of FB followers start to increase quickly. Now, Acura did introduce the RLX Sport Hybrid model, but based on the RLX FWD's tepid reception, I wouldn't think that car generated too much buzz. And if there was talks of the RLX SH version for the past year, so that buzz had run its course.
Basically, you can't deny that the TLX was primarily responsible for the recent increase in followers. It's not sitting at almost 520k followers just since the beginning of this year, an increase of about 120k. Outside of the TLX and RLX SH, there was no real exciting news that came from Acura. Could you say the "Race" commercial generated some of that? Sure you can, but don't forget, that commercial was riding on the coattails of the TLX's buzz, and the TLX was also featured in the commercial.

I don't agree with any of your points. Not one bit.

It's like me arguing that the stock market's upward trend is directly correlated to Facebook's IPO.

There's so many external forces and variables that you can't even begin to properly quantify reality.

And you say I AM the one trying to refute fact to fit an "agenda." Look at yourself, bub. Are you the guy that runs that Honda blog? ;)

LOL. The only "agenda" I have is to provide you with facts, which you clearly throw a blind eye to...to fit your agenda, again.

IF they keep close to the concept shown at the Detroit Show it will be a nice change. If they dumb it down to plain Jane looking, then it will be another sedan in that segment. I once owned a 2004 and 2006 TL. I loved them. When they went to that current OVERWEIGHT and blown up TL model, I left for my Audi 6er. It looks like the shrunk it a tad back to the size I had. Now KEEP the beautiful look you displayed at the Detroit Auto Show and people will come back to the product it once was.

Spy shots show that it's very close to the concept but looks just a bit more ordinary pretty much like every concept to production transition. The paint alone on that concept is probably thousands of dollars and once you go to standard paint you lose a bit of pizzas.

LOL. No one better touch my pizzas as I'm a hungry boy.. haha

@gkearns56, yes the production version is dialed down a bit, primarily the front and rear fascias and the side mirrors. But that would be expected. I think it's still ideal for the class: conservatively handsome without being ostentatious which harkens back to Acura's heyday.

Oh, a 2004 and 2006. Easily the best looking Acura ever designed and I'd argue one of the best looking cars designed in that decade.

Agent00R - I disagree, the original Acura Legend and Legend Coupe's are by far the most original, cleanest, best designed cars ever to come from the company. NSX aside, nothing since comes close to those break out cars.

Lets price it identical to an A6, 5er and E-class and see how many sales this poseur brand gets.
