Next Gen BMW 5 Series Details Leak Out - More Of An Evolution Than A Revolution?
Set to arrive sometime in 2016, BMW is currently at work developing and testing its next generation 5 Series. With the competition getting even stiffer from the likes of not only Mercedes and Audi, but also from Lexus, BMW isn’t about to let one of its most popular models fall behind the pack. AutoExpress managed to find out some details and, as expected, the new 5 Series likely won’t have a radical styling update.

It’ll be more evolutionary than revolutionary but still very much in line with the current design language. It’ll supposedly look more premium and sportier than the current car. It’ll also ride on a new lightweight platform that will allow for better handling. It’ll also lose some weight thanks to a diet of increased high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber. BMW reportedly wants to cut weight by at least 220 lbs. Expect to see both gasoline and diesel engines. In Europe, expect a 2.0-liter four diesel to power the 520d. Also for that market don’t be shocked to see BMW offer a 1.5-liter three-cylinder as well as the 2.0-liter turbo four found in the new Mini Cooper S.

I don't think anyone expected a design revolution from Bimmer at this point.

Just look at the X3, X5, 3 series, 4 series gran coupe. the current facelifted 5 series could fool even the most die hard Bimmer Fan into thinking it wasn't facelifted at all

THIS is all new? Did I miss something? This looks EXACTLY the same as the current generation facelifted 5-series.

At least Audi changed the design of its LED headlights and tailights for the facelifted A4, A5 and Q5 models.

What has gotten into BMW lately? First the ridiculous niches being created and now pretty much no differentiation between two generations of the same vehicle.

BMW has moved towards Audi's current design theme of making everything look the same from one model to the next and from one generation to the next.

Audi, fortunately, is moving away from its current strategy and will have a much greater differentiation and aggressive appearance for its models.

Frankly, I'm not sure the 5 Series needs a complete redesign. The current design works so well and, IMO, is the best-looking sedan in its segment. Then again, I said something similar about the E Class prior to the most recent updates, and now the more I see it the more it looks better to me.

The looks and stats of the current model are all good, but the magic is gone. They need to recapture the handling and driver intimacy of the E39 and distance the 5 from the ponderous 7

The 5 series has gotten closer to a luxury barge (which is fine), but I wish it was more of a sports car.

What about news on the new 7-Series? Doesn't it come out before the 5?

IMO, BMW needs to move on from the front "flared chrome grille" design language. It just doesn't scale up in size, tho it looks ok on the 3-series. However, on the X5, the up-sizing of the chrome, protruding grill and the large headlights, makes the front end look like a startled farm animal.

I think the hood needs a few more creases.

BMW designers have lost their direction... this is worse than same sausage different size formula that Audi implements.

BMW has never been about being overstated. The M Sport line is the best looking sedan out there (in that segment). Also the best driving and most comfortable. The MB has the worst seats I have ever been in and the steering is off in every way. The Audi is small on the inside and just lacks inspiration.
