Does Lexus Have The Keys To Taking Over The Luxury Crossover Market With The New NX?
The first sign from Lexus that it was preparing to completely alter its character was the LFA, along with a bunch of radical-looking concepts. Everything was a far cry from the typical ES, LS and GS models. Then Lexus began to incorporate the edgy concept styling into production cars. Love it or hate it, Lexus’ new styling language has attracted plenty of attention.

With the recent unveiling of the new NX crossover, it’s clearer than ever that Lexus has gone completely nuts – in a good way

I think the NX will be successful, but it's far from a "takeover" car. I actually think the new Murano is a lower-priced viable alternative as the exteriors are equally aggressive, but the Muranos interior is far superior. At the same time, the NX will be a lower-cost option to the RX, so it may encroach on Lexus' own sales of its most popular model.

Let's not forget that there's formidable competition in the segment with the Mercedes GLA, BMW X1 and forthcoming Q3, all strong cars in their own right. And, let's face it, the IS, while successful, is still a far cry from being able to threaten the 3 or C in sales, despite its more expressive character.

This car will sell, it already has a hefty pool of prospective buyers via the RX soccer mom fan club...

I just wish Lexus designs flowed more and seemed less chopped up. I should see the vehicle as one, not several mashed together.

When Lexus' designs flowed and were smooth, people said it was boring. When Lexus brings out its own design style, the same people complain it stands out too much.

@hughjass, Lexus designs were boring, there was nothing to flow, and they never had their own identity. The LS was admittedly their version of the S Class in the 90s.

You don't have to throw sheet metal together to call it tyour own, and you don't have to be boring for a design to flow.

Look at the Italians as well as the CLS for reference

That was actually pretty funny. I am pretty sure a car with sudden unintended acceleration problems definitely has "quality", not to mention all the Lexus models right now have such dated interior.

Nissan has a GT-R, the most powerful supercar on the planet and, Infiniti's lineup is now expanding all the way to the full size sedan/4 door coupe. What does Toyota/Lexus have? It has neither. Lexus is most likely the biggest poser brand that you can ever think of.

I'm sure NX will sell. But most likely the buyers are soccer moms and young girls again, just like how most buyers of RX are pretty much females.

I'll tell you this. I had a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder and it remains one of my favorite cars of all time. Its interior was just as nice as the Lexus GS300 I had afterwards. And here's an eye-opener for you. I had absolutely ZERO problems with my Pathfinder in 4 years (same with my 350Z in 6 years). Yet, my Lexus had a MAJOR warranty repair, right before the warranty expired. Then a few thousand miles later, the SAME EXACT warranty repair was going to be needed, but b/c I was out of warranty, it would have cost $4000+.

cid - did both your Pathfinder & 350Z have that sweet 3.5 liter 6, possibly one of the best mill's ever. That model Pathfinder is a classic, nice car...

I actually think the Lincoln MKC will out sell this Lexus.

This is a very nice looking crossover, and it makes the current RX350 look bland in my opinion. Its funny that the Japanese automakers are better at making crossovers (Lexus, Acura), while the Germans seem to excel with the sedans. I wonder if that is part of their strategic focus given you can't be the best at every type of vehicle.

People bought the Pontiac Aztec. I'm sure someone will surely buy this, too.

True and this disastrous eye sore is way, way uglier than the Aztec but there are some Lexus loyalists who will buy it no matter how awful it looks inside and out just because it's a Lexus.

They not only invented the luxury crossover market, they have owned it since. Where is the question?
