NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: BMW 13 Electric Takes 2014 World Green Car And Car Design Of The Year Awards

Just in time for U.S. sales to begin in May, the battery powered BMW i3 electric vehicle drove off with awards in two categories of the World Car of the Year awards at the New York International Auto Show today.

First, the BMW i3 won 2014 World Green Car, selected by a jury of 69 automotive journalists from around the world.  The other finalists were the Volkswagen XL1, an extremely lightweight diesel-electric hybrid; and the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron, which runs on compressed natural gas or a synthetic fuel Audi calls e-gas.

The others are worthy competitors, but the BMW i3 is also formidable, with an expected range on a single charge of 80 to 100 miles, with zero tailpipe emissions (actually, there is no tailpipe).

Giving that thing Car Design of the Year is maximum level trolling.

Right, there's no way a car that is revolutionizing the use of carbon fiber and lightweight materials for mass produced vehicles, with a concept car-esq interior made entirely out of sustainable materials, oh and it's electric, and all for under $50k, could possibly deserve Design of the Year. Those voters clearly must have been either bribed or idiots to give the award to such a car.

Well said JRobUSC! This site is filled with haters that spew garbage talk about cars they have never driven nor seen in person to make a fair comment about it. Besides, there's no need to trash a car because one doesn't like it.

It's not that I don't like it -- it's just so fu*king ugly.

It is pretty cool in person and the drive is very surprising to how quick it is. I didn't think I would like it in Orange, yet that is how I would get it.

Technically is the "Most Green Car Ever" as it is the only one I know that creates an interior out of sustainable & recyclable materials.

Disclaimer: I'm a car enthusiast and appreciate speed and driving dynamics. Regarding the I3, I can appreciate the tech that went into it. I'm sure it deserves the award.... BUT, every magazine article I've read by professional and amateur auto journalists said they hated the way it drives. If the mission is to get from point A to point B in city traffic, I'm sure it's going to achieve the goal. If the mission is to stir up some passion about driving while getting from point A to point B, forget it.
